Things are happening in Waxahachie. New construction things. Adorable downtown square filled with super cute restaurants and antique shop things. And Oddfest, an art festival benefitting the International Order of Oddfellows. Like I said, things.

I caught up with myself, who attended the event, to hear what all I had to say and it was quite a bit.

Waxahachie’s Adorable Downtown

First of all, the festival was adorable. Lots of oddball art things like a mega metal Sugar Skull, tons o’ pottery, CBD goods from Rebel Dreads Corp., a live band that my toddler delighted in, and on and on.

This isn’t a review of the festival, but it’s a good lead into this city. It’s about an hour south of Dallas on your way to Austin and worth a stop if you’ve never been. It might even be worth a move because, again, it’s really cute, surprisingly artistic, and with Dallas expanding like it is, it’s basically in our backyard. There are tons of Jim Lake Commercial Property signs down there and if you’re not familiar, he’s done quite a bit in Oak Cliff.

I remember a few years ago, there was speculation that Waxahachie would be the new Oak Cliff and with remote working, it just might happen. It’s far enough away from the City of Dallas you can dodge the hustle and bustle, but close enough to still get your NorthPark fix — or fancy restaurants or whatever it is you do for entertainment. Live bands? Dallas Cowboys? Psychic Fairs? The point is, it’s quarter-tank-of-gas close.

A Nod To Waxahachie’s History

The thing that’s always stood out to me about Waxahachie is the charming old Victorian and Craftsman homes with huge wraparound porches and pastel exteriors that dot the tree-lined streets. Now that the city is growing like everywhere else, it’s time for new construction.

Here’s one that’s newer. It was built in 2019 with exterior nods to old-timey while the inside has all the modern conveniences you’re looking for. It has a neutral color palette, wood floors, an open concept, an easy layout, etc. And it’s walking distance to downtown Waxahachie where you can pop into the Dove’s Nest, Pop’s Burgers, The Webb Gallery, Gran’s Antiques, or any of the other charmers along the square.
