Back in 1926, auctioneer James P. Anderson was tasked with auctioning the entire contents of a five-room apartment at 106 N. Edgefield. “Victrola, dining room furniture, chiffoniers, sanitary couch, rugs, rockers, chairs, ice box, stove, kitchen utensils, dishes, wash bench, tubs, wringer, etc. to be sold to highest bidder.” In the 1920s, the three-, four-, and five-room furnished apartments in this Oak Cliff multiplex went for $40 a month and up.

Today, 106 N. Edgefield Avenue is a single-family home with six bedrooms, five and a half baths, and 4,847 square feet, listed for $642,500 by Diane Sherman of Dave Perry-Miller InTown.

The Prairie-style home was built in 1915 in what is now the Winnetka Heights Historic District, an area of one-story bungalows with low-pitched gable roofs and larger two-story Prairies with center dormer windows atop wide, deep-set front porches.

Inside, the home features original pine hardwoods, 1915 pocket doors with beveled glass, and a grand staircase with built-in bookshelves.

The kitchen is full of possibility, Sherman says. Remodeled several times over the years and most recently updated this year, the kitchen boasts new cabinet doors, quartz countertops, a five-star commercial grade gas range with double ovens, a stainless steel farm sink, and an original built-in breakfront.

Though the home used to be separate apartments, the long-time owner converted it into a single-family home that really works.

“Imagine having not only living, plus home offices, plus classroom, plus recreation space, as well as multigenerational space if needed, ALL under one roof,” Sherman says.

On the ground floor resides a living room with parlor, eat-in kitchen, office, and laundry room. Here’s also where you’ll find the primary bedroom, a secondary bedroom/dressing area with built-ins and additional closet space, and a workout room.

Upstairs, you’ll find four bedrooms, two of which have adjacent sitting areas, a game room, an art studio, and a separate arts and craft room with a washbasin that opens to a large balcony. In addition, there’s a one-car detached garage and a third-story attic that’s floored and ready for air conditioning.

“It’s truly a fantastic home that offers flexibility and room to live, work, and play,” Sherman says.
