Charles Dilbeck is one of our North Texas treasures, a regional architect who designed more than 600 houses in Dallas from 1932 to 1970. Known for creating a welcoming style and romantic feel in his houses, Dilbeck is credited for designing the first Texas ranch homes.

Our Tuesday Two Hundred is Dilbeck-designed at 515 N. Oak Cliff Blvd. It has many of the architectural details you can expect to find in one of his houses, like detailed arched doorways, a large front porch with wood paneling on the ceiling, and an oversized fireplace.

Built in 1941, this home has quaint details and exceptional craftsmanship with two bedrooms, one bathroom, and 1,350 square feet on one story.

This home is located in North Oak Cliff’s L.O. Daniel neighborhood. Named a historic district in 1984, this hilly area features brick and frame bungalows, stone and brick Tudor cottages, and various Prairie frame homes, as well as quite a few post-war Dilbeck homes. As the Old Oak Cliff Conservation League writes, “this is noteworthy as the majority of Dilbeck houses are north of the Trinity [River] in University Park. His picturesque and often whimsical architecture makes the L.O. Daniel neighborhood worth looking into.”

The neighborhood is bounded by Hampton Road on the west, Jefferson Boulevard and Sunset Hills on the south, Rosemont Avenue and Winnetka Heights on the east, and Davis Street and West Kessler on the north.

The home has a farmhouse vibe, mixed with some modern updates, like the renovated kitchen. Dilbeck was known to mix the best elements of multiple historical eras in his designs, and it shows in the fanciful doorways, intricate crown mouldings, and carved fireplace mantel. There are tons of original details throughout this home, and the homeowners added a new roof this year.

A smart layout means light flows from room to room throughout the property, with large windows in almost every space. The main living room feels bigger than its 18-by-13 size, with bay windows and tall ceilings. Hardwoods are in all the common areas, which increases the sense of flow.

The kitchen is updated with white Shaker-style cabinetry, and the top cabinets have glass fronts. The renovations also added stainless steel appliances, including a gas range. Just off the kitchen is a sunroom, perfect as a breakfast area.

The split bedrooms share a bathroom with vintage blue-and-white tile, and they each have multiple windows and hardwood floors. The master features double French doors leading outside.

This home was listed Oct. 21 by Melissa O’Brien with Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate for $230,000.
