MarkNtel Advisors projects that the Indian payment gateways market, valued at USD 2.25 billion in 2026, will grow to USD 3.92 billion by 2032. This steady growth is indicative of the rising use of digital payments as the basis of domestic and international trade.

But that’s not the question being asked by Indian D2C brands on Shopify today. If demand is out there globally, why are so many international checkouts failing at the last step? The answer is often friction around payment. Currency confusion and absence of localised checkout experiences are quietly killing your conversions. This is where a Shopify payment gateway is the critical link that helps brands to overcome these hurdles and convert global attention into completed transactions.

Here’s how the right payment setup can help Indian brands unlock smoother cross border sales and go beyond borders

1. The Right Payment Infrastructure: A Driver of Global Growth

A payment gateway is more than a device to accept payments, it is a secured link between your Shopify store and the banks, card networks, fraud controls and settlement systems. As your international sales increase, you can get the setup right to make prices clearer, prevent transaction failures, and make reconciliation easier. Prices In Familiar Currencies

It is much easier for a customer to shop when shopping internationally if they see prices quoted in a currency they understand. Simple pricing removes the guesswork and helps shoppers know exactly what they’re spending before they get to the final checkout page.

But just because a shop lists a local currency does not mean the customer is charged in that currency. The Shopify Help Center says that only stores using Shopify Payments or Adyen as a primary gateway can process payments in a customer’s local currency with Shopify’s native checkout. Most other providers show prices in the local currency on the storefront but switch to the store’s default currency at checkout.

This is important for Indian merchants, since Shopify Payments is not listed as a payment provider available in India right now. Some other payment providers may offer separate multi currency or dynamic currency conversion services. For instance, Pine Labs says its international payments product supports international cards, dynamic and multi currency conversion, and over 50 currencies. Merchants must ensure their Shopify integration and account setup are detailed enough to support these features.

2. Strong Infrastructure for Cross Border Transactions

Cross border payments are complicated. There are many card issuers, banking networks, authentication rules and fraud controls. A payment gateway makes this easier by routing the transactions, screening for suspicious activity and providing clear information on the payment status.

A good infrastructure can prevent avoidable failures but no gateway can guarantee 100% approval. Authorization rates depend on the customer’s bank and card type, location, authentication results and the merchant’s risk profile. Brands should be tracking approval rates by country and payment type, not just one overall claim of success rate. A solid dashboard empowers teams to surface common issues, track refunds and understand where customers are dropping off in the flow of payment.

Selling internationally is not simply about selling the product, there’s a lot of work behind the scenes. Merchants need to keep track of payments, refunds, settlements, chargebacks, conversion costs and transaction fees across different markets. A centralised dashboard pulls together transaction status and reconciliation data into one view. Brands should ensure that the gateway they select has the features they need such as transaction and settlement currencies, international card fees, currency conversion costs, settlement schedules, payout terms, refund processing times and chargeback procedures. Also, brands should ensure the gateway has strong fraud management tools, clear reporting capabilities and reliable customer support.

3. Payment methods should be market specific

The Shopify payment gateway allows merchants to accept several payment methods through a single integration. According to Pine Labs Shopify documentation, the popular modes of payment include credit and debit cards, UPI, net banking, wallets, and EMI.

These options are helpful, but they do not help all audiences equally. UPI and Net Banking are primarily for customers in India while international consumers are more inclined to use globally accepted cards, digital wallets or payment methods popular in their countries. Indian brands need to choose payment options according to their target markets. A brand with a customer base in the US will require a different payment mix to one targeting the UK, Singapore or the Middle East.

4. High Value Purchases Are Driven By Payment Flexibility

You may see more hesitation at checkout for high ticket purchases. These products are more affordable when you can spread out the cost over time with installment plans.

Eligible merchants in India can provide bank backed EMI, cardless EMI or other affordability options.

These features are useful for selling to domestic consumers electronics, furniture, luxury goods, and other high ticket items. However, please do not advertise EMI schemes in India as a global payment option. International installment and “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) services are country specific and may require different providers, approvals and commercial agreements.

Brands should spend on common sense checkout upgrades beyond funding: mobile friendly pages, fewer redirects, clear shipping costs, accessible currency info, and straight-forward refund policies.

5. Security and compliance are critical

It’s important that consumers feel as though their payment information is secure. Merchants should partner with vendors that comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and use strong encryption and tokenization. PCI DSS sets the technical and operational requirements for organizations that store, process or transmit payment account data. An SAQ (for example, SAQ D) is a tool for compliance validation and the specific questionnaire depends on the setup of the merchant’s payment environment. Tokenization also replaces the card number of the customer with a secure token, thus decreasing the exposure of original card information.

According to the rules of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), most of the entities in the payment chain are not allowed to store actual card data, except the card issuers and the card networks. These are important for India, but brands selling internationally may also have to comply with the card network rules and regulations of the markets they operate in.

Better Shopify Payments Setup to Scale Globally

For Indian D2C brands looking to expand overseas, driving traffic is only half the story. That means customers have to be able to pay for their purchases without having to worry about currency, payment or security issues.

Pine Labs Online features integration with Shopify, domestic payment options, acceptance of international cards, currency conversion service, fraud controls and transaction reporting, among others. That said, brands ought to check what features are available to their particular account and ensure they work within the constraints of Shopify’s checkout.

Test the entire customer journey before you enter a new market, including the product page, currency display, payment, settlement, and refund processes. An optimized Shopify payment gateway turns more international interest into completed orders and lays a stronger foundation for global expansion.
