Enjoy Fright in The Heights With This North Edgefield Prairie-Style Home

If you’ve ever wondered why Winnetka Heights is so popular, making a visit to the neighborhood around Halloween will make you a believer. “I remember when I first moved in my Winnetka Heights home, I thought a couple of bags of candy would cut it,” said Compass agent Crystal Gonzalez. “I was so wrong and racing to get more candy by 6 p.m.”

Gonzalez is the listing agent of our High Caliber Home of the Week presented by Lisa Peters of Caliber Home Loans. Peters, who is well established in North Oak Cliff, hails Winnetka Heights as the epicenter for the area’s Halloween festivities. Not only that, our High Caliber Home of the Week is in a heck of a location for those who wish to get their trick-or-treat on.

“This is one of the best streets!” Gonzalez said about her listing at 222 N. Edgefield in Winnetka Heights. “Halloween is truly a special tradition in not only Winnetka Heights, but Oak Cliff. Several of the residents decorate their homes and it’s not limited to one neighborhood or street.”

If you’re one to carve jack-o-lanterns, this is a great spot to showcase your talent.

“Winnetka Heights is known for its front porches, and this one is huge,” Gonzalez added. “Everyone I know that lives in this neighborhood uses their front porch as much as any room in the house, especially in this fall weather! Yes you can even watch a cool storm from your covered porch.”

Of course, you can’t talk about Oak Cliff and Halloween without mentioning the home of Ralph Granado, a Beckley Avenue homeowner that populates his front yard with a rather macabre display. His family — all horror movie fans — sets up severed limbs and other grotesque ephemera for passers by and trick-or-treaters. It’s definitely worth a stop.

But back to Winnetka Heights. This particular listing is quite generous in size for the typical prairie home in the neighborhood, with four bedrooms, two full and one half baths, and approximately 2,500 square feet. Though it has seen a fair amount of renovation, it still has a lot of charm, too. Gonzalez has priced 222 N. Edgefield Ave. for $565,000.

“One of my favorite things about this home and Winnetka Heights in general is that the homes still have personality. It’s completely updated to meet the needs of a growing family or someone who likes to entertain, however, it offers what several neighborhoods don’t — a true sense of community,” Gonzalez said. “It’s also hard to find four large bedrooms in these older homes with great closet space, which this home offers. I always say, since most of historic homes were built pre Neiman’s, the builders didn’t understand that we would need lots of closet space!”

The home also has a bright kitchen that opens to a den or family room. That’s a great bonus for families that like to gather in the kitchen, but still need some additional living area. Also, the kitchen has food. And wine. Adding in a place to sit makes this home a perfect candidate for a “Fright in the Heights” stop during the annual progressive cocktail party in Winnetka Heights.

Slated for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, three Winnetka Heights homes will host a progressive cocktail party complete with themed drinks and snacks, along with other surprises, including a special spooky theme.  Want to attend “Fright in the Heights”?

Costumes are strongly encouraged! There will be a costume contest with prizes in three categories: Scariest Costume; Best Group/Ensemble; and Best Homemade.

Tickets cost $40 per person and will include all your food and beverage for the night. Tickets purchased here.

All proceeds from the event will go to help continue the Walkable Winnetka Sidewalk Replacement Grant Program, which works with the city and homeowners to pay for new sidewalks in Winnetka Heights.

All of the bedrooms in this Winnetka Heights Prairie-Style home are upstairs, but the master suite will definitely charm you, Gonzalez said.

“I love the master bedroom. It has a sitting area and a balcony, making it a true retreat,” she said. “I think that’s hard to find, even in newer homes, where you typically have a basic room for a bed, night stands, and a television. This layout makes it a space that you can relax, read your magazine and make your own.”

Still need more space? The backyard is huge, with a large deck for grilling in our 3-season weather. All of these factors combined — especially considering the season — make this High Caliber Home of the Week a spooktacular choice!
