Tuesday Two Hundred: Cozy N. Oak Cliff Bungalow has Saltwater Pool, Kitchen Reno

For this week’s Tuesday Two Hundred, we’re venturing out to the L.O. Daniel neighborhood of North Oak Cliff, to a renovated Craftsman at 229 N. Brighton Ave.

Listed at $225,000, this bungalow is a 3-1 with 1,378 square feet and a saltwater pool. The neighborhood is north of W. Jefferson Boulevard and adjacent to Winnetka Heights, near the intersection of W. Eighth Street and N. Rosemont Avenue. It is listed by Jenni Stolarski with Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International.

Built in 1921, this house sits on a tree-lined street and has wonderful curb appeal, with a wide, wood-plank front porch, hanging swing, and a ceiling fan. It also has authentic details, like painted dentil molding above the doors and along the roofline, as well a soft green, cream, and brown color palette. Jump to read more!

The front door opens into the living area, which measures 13-by-13 and has an original wood-burning fireplace. This room has recessed lighting, new warm gray paint, and a Craftsman-style ceiling fan. The hardwoods are original and refinished, and run throughout the house, as do new crown moldings.

The windows are original, and flood the house with natural light. Folding glass and wood doors separate the living room from the dining room, but can be retracted to create an open space and great flow.

The dining room leads into the kitchen, which measures 19-by-11. Recent renovations recreated the space to include black granite counters, a white subway tile backsplash, Marmoleum checkerboard tile flooring, and new cabinets and hardware (the old cabinets are now in the garage, where they add tons of storage). The dishwasher, gas range/oven, and built-in microwave are stainless steel.

The kitchen flows into a second eating area, which the current owners are using as storage and a space for their washing machine. The doorway leads to the backyard.

A central hallway connects the two primary bedrooms and the one bathroom. The front bedroom measures 13-by-12 and is the same warm gray as the living and dining rooms. A door leads to the front porch.

The biggest downside to this property is in its one bathroom, which is small. But single bathrooms are common in houses of this era, and the current owners did include it in the renovation. It has beadboard and original cabinets, with a new mirror, pedestal sink, floor tiles, and lighting.

The master bedroom measures 15-by-12 and has a head-turning painted ceiling with a crystal chandelier. The charcoal gray ceiling is a lovely backdrop for the sparkles of light from the fixture.

The back bedroom is narrow and long, measuring 17-by-eight, and is accessible through the master and kitchen. This makes it a natural fit for a nursery, but the space could also be a home office. Four of the six windows in this room overlook the backyard.

The backyard has a saltwater pool, which can be gentler on the eyes and skin than traditionally chlorinated pools, as well as requiring less overall maintenance. Palm trees and crepe myrtle trees landscape the space, which has several seating areas. There’s not much grass back there, so maintenance would be easy. Just outside the fence, there’s a renovated two-car garage with workspace and storage.

This house went on the market, and quickly came under contract, so it might be sold at the start of the new year. It’s no wonder with the extensive renovations and North Oak Cliff location. What do you think of this bungalow?
