This Winnetka Heights Prairie Style Home Is Like a Meta Work of Art

Speaking to Diane Sherman of Dave Perry-Miller is always a pleasure because she shares such an enthusiasm and affinity for historic Kessler Park homes. When I look up a home’s history in the Dallas Morning News back archives, chances are Diane’s already done that and ten times more to know all about a home’s unique provenance. This week’s High Caliber Home of the Week, sponsored by Caliber Home Loans, is no exception.

Diane’s listing takes us to 418 N. Rosemont Avenue, a three-bedroom, 2,443-square-foot home situated at the northwest gateway into the Winnetka Heights Historic District of Oak Cliff. It’s a Foursquare Prairie style built in 1916, so named for its cubic shape with boxed-in eaves and symmetrical four-room bi-level floor plan. This one’s particularly special for its wraparound porch and second story balcony. But there’s lots more that makes this home special.

Stepping inside is like stepping into a museum. The longtime owner — a designer — achieved that look with painstaking years of work, Sherman says. Weekend after weekend, the owner worked alongside his father to sand the trim and drywall down to the wood, carefully repaint, and repair as needed.

The result is dramatic — museum-finish walls and deep, detailed trim around the windows and door frames. The formals feature box beamed ceilings, plantation shutters, and a white on white palate to showcase art.

Sherman is well versed in Foursquare Prairies since she lives in one and that’s why she can tell this one on N. Rosemont is a step above. “This one has choice cut quarter-sawn oak floors and bigger room sizes,” she says. “It’s a grade above an average Foursquare.”

The large dining room features double French doors with divided sidelights that open to the beautiful side porch. This flows into the formal living area, which spans the full width of the home.

The kitchen that opens to the casual den features white oak cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. The antique butcher block doesn’t stay with the home, but that leaves room for a gorgeous island of your choice.

A former sleeping porch serves as a home office and exercise area. Walls of windows offer views of this gorgeous neighborhood and all the soft natural light you could ever need.
