Watauga is a suburb in Tarrant County about 10 miles northwest of Fort Worth. A quick Google search tells us it’s a Native-American word meaning “the land beyond.” A quick chat with listing agent Seth Fowler fills us in on the rest.

“Watauga is a city that meets the needs of just about everyone — singles, families, empty nesters and first-time homeowners.” It’s likely houses like this one that are part of the draw.

It’s not a huge house, it’s not a fancy house, it’s not a thrills-and-chills house even. It’s a solid three-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,250-square-foot brick home that’s listed at $200,000.

But that’s not even the real story The real story is the current owners are only the second owners. They’ve been there since 1984 when they bought it from a young couple for someone in the $60,000s. CAN YOU IMAGINE?

Of course, back then the interest rate was between 13 and 15 percent so that’s a little different, too. Rumor has it that the insane interest rate (though not at the time) was too much for the original owners and they had to sell.

And the current owners were happy to settle in. They raised their family in this home. Went to football games (we’re guessing, I mean it is Texas), church, had sleepovers, probably even burned a little bike rubber in the cul-de-sac. Maybe did a sick jump or two. It was the 1980s after all.

One of those kids – a son – went on to work for well-known builder and when this home needed a few updates, he stepped in. He helped select the engineered hardwoods that you’ll find throughout the house.

When his parents were over it with the bathtub, he helped remodel that, too. They went with a white subway tile with an octagonal penny tile inset and the look is more than just a little modern.

In the kitchen they added beadboard to the walls and shiplap to the ceiling to keep it fresh. Butcher block countertops, Shaker-style cabinets, and soft-close drawers round out the “oh-I-wasn’t-expecting-that” amenities. All this and again, it’s $200,000.

Is Watauga a hike from here? Sure it is, but for a very, very well-maintained home like this one, it might just be worth the drive.

Williams Trew agent and Tarrant County Tuesday columnist Seth Fowler is representing 6221 Green Apple Court, which is listed for $200,000.
