This Midcentury Modern Brings the Outside In With Architect Style

Wood and walls of windows make this 1979-built home feel like an homage to Midcentury Modern and Frank Lloyd Wright design, but has been updated with the clean style and amenities of today’s homes. This four-bedroom, three-bath, and one half-bath home at 6933 Delrose Drive in northeast Dallas is 3,835 square feet and listed by Marmie Leech of Compass Real Estate Texas for $1.65 million.

Designed as his own home, Dallas architect David Ludwick incorporated bringing nature into the living environment through glass window walls — a concept that architect Eddie Maestri later expanded when he and builder Jim Scott & Sons began the home’s renovation in 2017. Delrose Drive was featured on the popular 2018 Lakewood Home Tour and AIA Dallas Tour of Homes, the prestigious architect-curated home tour in Dallas.

Walk into this architectural gem to find wood ceiling beams, floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace, and of course that fabulous wall of solarium-style fixed glass windows that look out onto the property’s 1/2-acre creek lot. The striking custom sunburst design on the walnut front door harkens to a 60s Midcentury Modern style, while the vaulted ceilings with wood beams are reminiscent of 70s/80s contemporary.

Maestri’s updates are notable in the kitchen, which features rift-cut white oak cabinets, Silver Macaubus quartzite island with quartz accent countertops, backsplash tile with brass Schluter detail, and an interior grow wall made of wooden planters.

“Throughout the home, there’s a lot of wood detailing and notches in the trim that form these boxes,” Maestri says. “We took that idea to create these planters for the grow wall in the kitchen.”

It’s a great kitchen for gourmets who’ll appreciate the Wolf appliances including a double oven and range, built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator, built-in microwave, ice dispenser, and dual sinks with disposals. Notice the marble cutouts in the wooden floors, which were custom cut by hand to fit into the wooden floor. The light fixture in the breakfast room is original to the house (and gorgeous!).

A wall of double doors in the kitchen leads to a tri-level deck spanning the home’s entire length. “Initially a wall was there that really separated the kitchen from the backyard, but we added these double doors to the patio deck that bring them together,” Maestri says. With gates that enclose the deck, this creek-lot home is even dog and kid-friendly.

The master suite has soaring ceilings, large fixed glass windows, and a private step-out balcony.

The modern bath, made bright by multiple skylights, features separate vanities, a custom closet system, standalone shower made of silver vein-cut travertine, and deep vessel tub.

The second bedroom is as impressive as the master, with floor-to-ceiling windows, balcony access, and a private second-story loft with parquet wood flooring.

The floor plan is split with one bedroom downstairs, and three bedrooms upstairs, two of which was added above the garage according to the initial architect’s original plans, Maestri says. There’s also a game room upstairs.

Delrose Drive is located on a quiet street within walking distance of highly rated Lakewood Elementary and in the attendance zones for Long Middle School and Woodrow Wilson High School. This is a special home with outstanding architectural features that are awe-worthy!
