This JanMar Home on Saint Judes Was Hiding in Plain Sight

A few months ago I attended an estate sale here where I was more enchanted by the house than the treasure inside. This is that house.

Albeit, it’s hard to tell behind the overgrown trees in front, this 3,466-square-foot home on a .37 acre lot is gorgeous. The four-bedroom, four-bath on Saint Judes Drive at Hillcrest and Forest sits high on a corner lot with porte cochere driveway framing the dramatic step-up entrance. Swing the ornate wooden double doors open to the Spanish tile entryway and you can tell this is a special home. A JanMar home.

The hilly, wooded JanMar neighborhood located west of Central, east of Hillcrest, and south of Forest is a collection of custom homes built in the late 50s and early 60s ranging in style from midcentury modern, to renovated ranch style, and newer contemporary construction. Most of the homes are located on large wooded lots ranging from one-third to half an acre. And if you’re curious, the name is an amalgam of the developer’s daughters, Janet and Margaret.

This home was built in 1980 and has largely been untouched in updates, but even the period signatures like wallpaper were chosen so tastefully it doesn’t scream blast from the past. Grasscloth in the dining room as your walk in to the right. Brass and crystal fixtures in the bathrooms that actually look new. Spanish tile in the sunken living room and throughout. Textured carpet in the cedar-paneled gameroom, well I remember thinking that carpet should go.

Saint Judes was listed for as much as $834,900 and has come down in price more than $100k. Despite my twice-weekly searches of real estate listings, somehow I’ve missed this listing for 85 days that it’s been on the market.

The home has two living areas, dining room, breakfast room, and split bedrooms across the house. The kitchen, which sits across from the second living area or gameroom, has granite countertops, breakfast bar, buffet space with glass front cabinets, and stainless steel appliances including Thermador gas cooktop, Kitchen Aid dishwasher, and Kitchen Aid double oven.

The master suite has a fireplace and access to the large covered patio and landscaped pool and spa area. The master bath features dual sinks, standalone shower, garden tub, walk-in closet, and linen closet.
