While Texas was in the top 20 in a recent Bankrate.com ranking of best states for retirees, crime and culture kept it from hitting the top 15.

The Lone Star state was ranked 17th in the study, which looked at 11 public and private datasets that impacted the life of a retiree, in five categories: affordability, wellness, weather, culture, and crime, which were weighted 40 percent, 25 percent, 15 percent, 15 percent, and five percent, respectively.

Texas ranked fourth for weather, 13th for wellness, 50th for culture, 24th for affordability, and 37th for crime.

Nebraska took top honors, and Maryland was the worst, the Bankrate.com report found. The top five were Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota, and Florida.

“There are many factors to consider when deciding where to retire,” said Bankrate.com data analyst Adrian Garcia. “Some people may choose to stay close to family, while others prefer to seek out warm weather or affordable living. It comes down to very personal preferences, so it’s important to weigh all factors and determine what is most important for your happiness.”

In fact, a recent look at home buying by retirees shores up that many are choosing to move closer to family.
