Temporary Ban on New Short-Term Rentals Starts Monday in Plano

Plano will ban new short-term rentals starting Monday.

Starting Monday, new short-term rentals won’t be allowed in the City of Plano. A temporary, year-long ban starts May 15.

Short-term rentals have been discussed in Plano and several other North Texas municipalities for the past year or more. Plano residents pleaded with the council in November for zoning changes that would regulate or ban STRs in residential areas.

The decision to temporarily ban new STRs, made May 8 in a joint meeting of the Plano City Council and its Planning and Zoning Commission, was prompted by a recent shooting outside a Plano STR in a residential area.

The issue also has been a hot topic for the City of Dallas.

A briefing on short-term rentals is tentatively scheduled to go before the Dallas City Council on June 7, with a possible vote the following week.

Dallas city staff members are gathering information on zoning, enforcement, data analytics, and certificates of occupancy, and will deliver more information to the council next month. While an outright residential ban and a zoning overlay to regulate STRs in certain areas have been discussed, a temporary, year-long ban on new STRs has not been considered in Dallas.
