Once Upon a Tudor — Dines and Kraft on Westlake is Open on Father’s Day

It’s not often you can snap up a flawless Dines and Kraft Tudor in Lakewood. One of my favorites hit the market this month and it’s a storybook charmer. Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate’s Henda Salmeron has 6914 Westlake Avenue listed for $999,000.

A few years ago I was writing about cute laundry rooms — yes, they exist — and this four-bedroom, 1928 home was on my list. I remember feeling like Snow White winding my way up the path to this cottage in a woodland wonder. The seller is a master gardener and created the lush setting.

When the door opened I felt I’d stepped back in time. Stained glass windows, arched doorways, and a Batchelder-style fireplace.  What more could you want? Maybe perfectly updated bathrooms designed by Lakewood’s own Carol Gantt, who is the only person I’ve ever known that can create a seamless remodel or addition to a vintage home. She’s responsible for the gorgeous bathrooms and that cute laundry room.

Gantt also took the screened in porch back to its origins. “It had been enclosed in the ‘70s as a sunroom and had really garish stained glass panels everywhere, so we turned it back into a screened porch,” she said. Now it’s the perfect spot to have a mosquito-free afternoon sipping a tall, cold glass of lemonade.

The kitchen updates retained the period charm with seeded glass-front cabinets, painted tiles, and of course the breakfast room with buffet counter you find in most Lakewood homes of this era.

The light-filled master suite, or should I say sanctuary, is upstairs. French Prairie style doors open out onto the large landing that doubles as a study. You can take a seat on the balcony and gaze out over the New Orleans style courtyard below, complete with fountain, fireplace and a guesthouse.

The master bathroom is the ultimate retreat. Marble counters, hardwood floors, vintage sconces and a claw-foot tub will make you want to grab the bubble bath and soak away the day.

After your Father’s Day celebration brunch, head over to 6914 Westlake and get a peek inside from 3:30 to 5p.m. Sunday.
