If you are a nature lover, you will fall hard for our Inwood House of the Week at 9744 Van Dyke Road. This reinvented transitional ranch home in Old Lake Highlands is our pick for the perfect perch.

When Walter Hetherwick of Hetherwick Construction and Hetherdell Homes found the original 1950s house on a third of an acre, he knew it was in a perfect location for a young family.

Boy, was he right.

This transitional ranch is in the coveted Blue Ribbon Hexter Elementary attendance zone. It’s across the street from Norbuck Park, which offers a ton of family-friendly amenities. There are tennis courts, four baseball diamonds, two soccer/football fields, hike and bike trails, a natural wildflower area, a playground, and a designated outdoor inline and roller hockey court with lights. Please note there is also a pick-up hockey game every Friday night at 8:30!

The house is a quick jog to White Rock Lake with paddle boarding, fishing, sailing, hiking, and biking. Just across Northwest Highway, at Flagpole Hill, the latest state-of-the-art park was unveiled on Sept. 13. The City of Dallas and Dallas Parks and Recreation Department collaborated with the Jordan Spieth Family Foundation and KOMPAN Playgrounds to create the first all-inclusive park in Dallas created for all ages and abilities.

Hetherwick knows a thing or two about construction. He’s been in business 39 years and is a very hands-on guy. He went out of his way to carefully preserve portions of the original 1950s home.

“The house had good bones, so I did not see the point of tearing it completely down,” Hetherwick said. “You miss some of the character when you do that. We took the center of the house out and left two bedrooms on the west side and the garage on the east side. I was there seven days a week for eight months,” Hetherwick added. “It was a labor of love.

Hetherwick added the second story and all of the wonderful modern amenities we long for in a home. The formal living space is anchored by a cool, clean-lined, stacked-marble, wood-burning fireplace. Massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the front yard.

“I really like the formal living space,” David Bush listing agent Kevin Sayre said. “It’s cozy and has a very nice vibe to it.”9744-Van-Dyke-Rd-2

This transitional ranch offers the open-plan living that is so popular today. “I love the kitchen with the layout overlooking the family room since I like to cook,” Hetherwick said. He flanked another wood-burning fireplace with more floor-to-ceiling doors leading to a covered patio with, you guessed it, another fireplace.

9744-Van-Dyke-Rd-1-1It’s rare to see three downstairs bedrooms in any two-story home. Remember, Hetherwick opted to preserve the original bedrooms and add a master suite, so this is a rare find indeed. There are two more bedrooms on the second floor as well as the laundry room.

Hetherwick went out of his way to add exceptional and thoughtful features and details, such as five-inch oak hardwood floors, quartz counters, porcelain tile, a complete appliance package, zoned central heat and air, dual tankless water heaters, a sprinkler system, and a security system.

Priced at $1.2 million, this reinvented transitional ranch is a rare opportunity to own an exceptional family home near some of the best outdoor amenities on offer in Dallas.

Open House: Sunday, Nov. 4, 1-3 p.m.
