You’ll Want to See This Northwood Hills Estates Late Midcentury Ranch This Weekend

Only three people have owned this week’s Inwood Home of the Week, sponsored by Inwood National Bank. A Methodist Hospital doctor and his wife who purchased and selected the first lot on this street. A private practice attorney and his interior designer wife. And today’s sellers who fell in love with the home at first sight.

I tell you all this to say that this beautiful 1969-built home in the Estates section of Northwood Hills has been loved the way older homes should be. Every owner has put their touch on it and made it better for the next generation, and isn’t that the hope for all homes? That someone put heart and thought into the design choices of the home, and thereby gave it a soul.

The midcentury ranch sits on a 0.58-acre pie-shaped lot that backs to a wooded creek at Belt Line and Hillcrest. Here the hilly, serpentine streets with mature oaks make you feel secluded in the best possible way.

The 5,940-square-foot home has five bedrooms and five baths with a three-car garage and a pool house. Step through the exquisite leaded glass doors to find formal dining at your left. Along one wall, that’s a built-in buffet and countertop in the same warm mocha tone as the wainscoting-bordered walls.

In one of the three large living areas, you’ll find pristine Mexico Saltillo tile floors, a stone fireplace, and a partial wood ceiling with custom designed chandelier. And seriously, it’s hard to find that tile. I know of a homeowner that had to import a pallet of that terracotta tile that’s characteristically imperfect to match her original tile.

Another large living room is all windows and skylights. Eight of them to be exact in this room that used to be more of a greenhouse solarium. In fact, this room is begging for another kind of flooring that I can’t quite envision at the moment and furniture that I can only think to call “breezy.” Someone help me out — tell me in the comments what this room needs.

The eat-in kitchen allows ample counterspace and boasts a walk-in pantry, a double oven and upgraded stainless steel appliances. An oversized skylight keeps things bright.

The generous first-floor owner’s suite has a cool little setup. The bedroom has an attached office that was originally built as a nursery. Wood floors and built-ins complete the look of this private study. Still the bedroom is large enough to house a dedicated sitting area and fireplace.

The spa bath features dual vanities and walk-in closets, granite countertops and a hydrotub. Completing the downstairs is a game room and en suite bedroom. Three additional bedrooms are upstairs.

The multi-tiered, resort-style backyard includes a large pool, an outdoor kitchen with built-in grill, grassy yard, and a pool house. This yard is highlighted by multiple Japanese Maples which act as a backdrop to this truly private setting backing up to a green belt and a creek.
