Climate Change and Real Estate: Should We Insure Trees Like Celebrities Insure Limbs?

Poor-Tree1We had some really wild weather yesterday, almost as if on cue after this week’s sobering report on Climate Change: Get used to more flooding, wildfires and drought, depending on where you live. In Dallas, we have tornadoes, flash-flooding, and lots of downed trees and power lines. This was taken at Lovers Lane at Inwood Road!

This poor huge tree went kaput, fortunately not ON the house. Reminds me of a tree that we had over our house on Park Lane, R.I.P. One day I heard a loud “crack”, and couldn’t figure out where it had come from. It wasn’t until hours later, when someone showed up at the front door, that I saw a tree had split and a huge branch had fallen onto our roof. No damage to the roof, but that tree was an ordeal to remove and eventually turn into firewood.

Buyers pay dearly for lots with 100 year old trees on them in Dallas. Wonder if there is any way to insure them?
