While they may not be my favorite homes ever, I do love houses that have a funky, Devil-may-care vibe to them. They’re the “anything goes” type of home, and their mish-mash of decor, colors, and materials proves a method to the madness of an artists’ mind. So I was happily surprised to see this cute bungalow in Fort Worth’s Country Club Heights neighborhood on the market.
This two-bedroom, two bath cottage is a home in which the seller has made full use of every color in the paint bucket. Combining patterns, wood, mosaics, and glass in a way that seems to have no rhyme or reason is a very fun way to keep your interest, and to make a small space (1,482 square feet!) feel much larger. There’s always another nook, another detail, another little surprise!
Located at 3778 W. 6th Street in Fort Worth’s Monticello area and listed by RE/MAX Trinity’s Paula Pittsinger, you can get this cute, funky cottage for just $279,900.
The shiplap on the walls and ceiling gives this 1922-built home a very cozy feel, and really adds some texture. You’ll never have to worry about chipping paint or ugly nail holes with this kind of wall covering! It also gives the living area a warm, cabin-in-the-woods ambiance, which is accented by the French doors and windows that keep the space from being dank and claustrophobic. The fun checkerboard floor in the entry way emphasizes the cool front doors, and is a neat off-set to the painted hardwood floors in the living area. And check out those arched passageways!
The kitchen is so fun, with a tile counter and a mosaic backsplash. The two-tone stain on the cabinets adds even more visual interest as your eyes are drawn up to the glass-front upper cabinets, where you can show off your funky, hand-thrown coffee mug collection. The appliances are stainless steel and the kitchen is open to a lovely breakfast nook/ dining area with a cool terracotta tile floor. The home also has a sunroom with an awesome stone floor and tons of windows that could also be used as an office or study if you work from home.
The bedrooms are interesting to say the least. The master bedroom has a coat of Oompa Loompa orange paint on the walls that is mildly alarming. A good primer and a subtle coat of something neutral — maybe even a sagey green — would be a better fit for the home. I’m a little disappointed at the carpet in the 14 x 17 master, too. Perhaps there are hardwoods underneath that could get the same treatment as those in the kitchen and living areas. But hey, there’s a cool fireplace! Bonus! The second bedroom is ensconced in tin ceiling panels. It’s a bit much, and while this may be a neat treatment for some, to me it feels overwhelming.
Now, the bathrooms are like a study in opposites. In the master you see black and bright pink 3-inch square tile in the very funky shower with a nearby single-sink vanity clad in formica. The second bath has large-sized rectangular ash gray tile and a much more modern layout. Sue me, but I would be ripping out the master bath right after closing to make it more in line with the other. Or maybe do something fun and funky and not so weird as the half-wall shower.
