Discover a North Dallas Architectural Treasure That Recently Found Its Next Steward

Midcentury Moderns set amidst tranquil nature scenery have never been more popular. For those enamored with this residential style, which has aged like fine wine, an authentic architectural gem in Dallas is a must-see. The home recently listed and quickly went into contract thanks to high-impact marketing and the pristine quality of the property.

Roughly 11 years ago, the current sellers came to an open house here, fell in love with the one-of-a-kind residence, and moved in within three weeks. As well as giving them a dreamy place to call home for over a decade, 13958 Hughes Lane has provided the homeowners with a sense of pride and stewardship in preserving the 1967-built haven’s architecture and story.

Like a treasure hunt, the sellers thoroughly enjoyed uncovering the property’s past, which had not been thoroughly documented. Through searching archives and conducting interviews, they pieced together how their cherished home came to be.

Architect Neal Lacey — who studied under Harwell Hamilton Harris — designed the angular, 3,760-square-foot home in the heart of North Dallas and it has stayed true to its original form through the years. It was built for former TI Executive and DISD School Board President, Marvin Berkeley, and his wife, Betty — remaining in their family from 1967 to 2005. They cared for the midcentury masterpiece diligently and thoughtfully made updates as needed.

Today, having been meticulously maintained by past owners and the current sellers, the suave dwelling displays what mattered to people in the ‘60s: Glamorous entertaining. Indeed, the home’s four bedrooms are comfortable and spacious, but effortless hosting was the clear priority in terms of the layout.

Stepping inside, the living spaces are immense, open, and striking with trees and the sparkling pool constantly in view. Just imagine scenes unfolding here in 1967: Guests mingling around the glassy living room’s fireplace with stylish cocktails, grilling on the adjacent deck, or gathering in the open kitchen to try fashionable appetizers. These spaces are still captivating and party-ready in 2023, poised to accommodate casual family fun or glitzy occasions at the drop of a hat.

Come summertime, the outdoor areas — unfolding across a beautiful half-acre lot — take center stage. It may feel like you’re in a legendary Slim Aarons photograph when lounging by the picturesque pool or having lunch al fresco with friends on a sunny day.

Allie Beth Allman & Associates agents Lauren Savariego and Julie Haymann, who are experts at marketing special vintage homes, represent the once-in-a-lifetime listing. Savariego reflects, “It’s a joy to see a house that has hardly been touched and to be able to see how vibrantly it has been used throughout its lifetime.”
