Home Designers Are Singing The Coastal Blues

Home designers are singing the — coastal blues, that is — and are using this color palette in every area of the home. Lifestylist® Suzanne Felber has had a busy Spring attending many of the major trade shows including the International Builders Show and the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show and discovered that using color in your home is a huge trend coming to a showroom and new home near you.

Memorial Day weekend is usually when a lot of Dallasites head to cooler climates, but if you choose to spend the summer at home, why not bring the beach to you? We were excited to discover that color is back, but it’s being used carefully in strategic ways to add color and emotion to a room.

Sherwin Williams has introduced Oceanside as their Color of the Year. They describe the color as “A complex, deep color that offers a sense of the familiar with a hint of the unknown, Oceanside, bridges together a harmonious balance of blues and greens that can be found in what’s old and new.” We also see a trend of mid-century modern furniture, especially when it’s a well-preserved original piece as something that Dallas buyers have fallen in love with, and Oceanside works perfectly with those rich, MCM color palates. Visit Lula B’s in Oak Cliff or the Design District to find great examples — they recently got in a crushed velvet Harvest Gold sofa and loveseat, and people were fighting over who got to purchase it first!

We’ve been going to estate sales recently looking for the perfect finds for our 1940s home, and as much as I love an old Chambers range, new technology has so many great things to offer I prefer getting that vintage look in a new appliance. Elmira Stove Works offers the perfect shade of blue in their Northstar range and refrigerator line — Beach Blue would look great in a retro kitchen or in a contemporary home that was begging for some personality pieces.

Natural stone comes in different hues of blue, and this Blue Agata granite definitely makes a statement in this kitchen.  There are lots of misconceptions out there about natural stone — a great resource to find out the facts is UseNaturalStone.com.

Aluminum railings are being seen in the best homes inside and out, and Feeney now offers an exciting version in Blazing Blue. One of the best things about these is that they are low maintenance — their powder-coated finish offers superior color retention and weather protection — no rusting, cracking, or peeling!

Danver Stainless Outdoor Kitchen with sea glass door inserts

Living in Dallas means that we can entertain outdoors almost all year long, why not invest your vacation money into doing a “staycation” and turn your home into a paradise that you never want to leave?  Outdoor kitchens continue to be a huge favorite remodeling project with pizza ovens being one of the current must-haves. Using cabinets that can withstand our major temperature fluctuations is critical, and we fell in love with this stainless outdoor cabinetry from Danver Stainless Outdoor Kitchens. The sea glass door inserts add that pop of blue while adding a beachy feel to your entertaining outdoor spaces.

We are going to spend the Memorial Day weekend painting our vintage pool Bikini Blue — it’s time to start enjoying this beautiful weather and start doing some entertaining at home.
