Next in a series: Dallas-Fort Worth neighborhoods celebrate the holidays with light displays like no other. We’re presenting neighborhoods individually this year, so let us know if you know of a neighborhood that needs to be showcased. Nominate a neighborhood in an email. Here’s the series so far.

Neighborhood: Burkman Holiday Home

Where: 3809 Hazelhurst Drive | Map

When: Beginning Friday, Dec. 2. Light times are from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for Superhero Hour (lights will on at dusk for sensory-sensitive individuals) and from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. for all other visitors. The display will be closed on Monday and Tuesday nights. The display will be on every night during the week of Dec. 19.

What Makes It Unique: The Burkman family of Frisco gained national acclaim after an appearance on ABC’s The Great Christmas Family Light Fight last year. The Burkmans’ display was one of 24 finalists in 2020 and it was shown in 2021. The display is a tradition they started decades ago when they learned that then-2-year-old Alex — the first of two sons on the autism spectrum — was captivated by Christmas decorations and bright lights.

What You Can See: Tens of thousands of lights. On their website, Corey and Jen Burkman explained their motivation in going big: “Throughout our 23 years of marriage, we had many people help us when we began navigating a world with 2 children with Autism,” the family wrote. “This wasn’t cheap, we had no idea where to find help, and sometimes struggled to afford a fun holiday for our kids. We vowed that when we were able to, we would give back just as those did for us. Don’t get us wrong, we will always have a competitive spirit. But this display is about so much more now. It is about embracing our unique differences and knowing that everyone and anyone is capable of doing ‘GREAT. things.”
