Tragically, not every project that an architect designs makes its way from concept to reality. Truly, some of the most ground-breaking work that architects do never break ground. However, these designs and concepts deserve recognition, and that’s just what the AIA Dallas Unbuilt Awards will do.

This year’s pop-up exhibition tomorrow, April 28, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. is hosted by Lofty Spaces at 816 Montgomery in the Cedars. You can check out the gallery of unbuilt designs and cast your ballot on your favorites while meeting and mingling with the show’s jurors. Admission is $15 for AIA Dallas members and $20 for the general public.

Unbuilt Design Awards are part of AIA Dallas’ Design Awards program that recognizes outstanding work by Dallas architects in Dallas and all over the world. The Unbuilt Design Awards aim to provoke a discussion about the future of design among the community and architects.

The awards ceremony and gallery show will include the announcement of the People’s Choice Award winner based on ballots cast during the reception, the Press Choice Award winner as determined by local press jurors, and the official announcement of the 2016 Unbuilt Design Award winners selected by nationally renowned architect jurors.

Unbuilt Design Award entries may include any building design (conceptual or theory-based design study), interior architecture, restoration, or urban design/planning project for which the documentation has been complete since January 1, 2011.

The 2016 architect jurors include Jacob Brillhart, an architect, painter, and professor of architecture as well as the founder of Brillhart Architecture; Mary-Ann Ray, a principal of Studio Works Architects, co-founder and co-director of the experimental laboratory for urban and rural research and design BASE Beijing, and the Taubman Centennial Professor of Practice at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning; and Adam Marcus, AIA, director for Variable Projects, a partner in Futures North, and assistant professor of architecture at California College of the Arts.
