This South Dallas House is More Than a House — It’s a Legacy

Abounding Prosperity IncorporatedGone Too Soon

This cute little house with the orange front door has a pretty cool story that might even overshadow the updates. It’s one of four that were purchased and renovated by Kirk D. Myers. Myers passed away unexpectedly earlier this year, but this is just a part of his legacy.

Myers loved South Dallas and was dedicated to making it a better place. Creating elevated, affordable housing was just one of his passions.

Abounding Prosperity Incorporated

In November 2005, Myers founded a non-profit called Abounding Prosperity Incorporated with a mission “to provide services that address health, social and economic disparities among Black Americans with a particular emphasis on gay and bisexual men, cisgender women, transgender women, and their families.”

His passion for South Dallas and helping others came from his mom, Irene Trigg-Myers. Before he passed away, he was able to honor her by revitalizing a park in South Dallas and naming it after her. She instilled in him the idea of doing it yourself. One of Myers best known quotes is, “We can’t wait for others to save our community, it is up to us to save ourselves.”

Gone Too Soon

Myers was just getting started on his housing plans but was able to see four come to life. We covered one of his other projects on Carpenter, one sold off the market, and Ebby Halliday’s Isaiah Poole said there’s one more that will hit the market soon. They’re all within a few miles of each other and they’re each filled with unexpected, modern details.

Poole said that’s the way Myers was. He had foresight and often knew what you needed before you needed it. Poole said one day Myers brought him a set of China and Poole was like what the heck am going to do with that? The dishes sat in the corner and collected dust for a hot minute. Then one day, he set the table, then he hosted a dinner party and then he was like oh, okay, I get it now. All inspired by the simplicity of a gift from his mentor and friend.

Myers’ death was a huge loss to the community. But to see what he was able to create is pretty freaking cool. He designed most of the finish out himself and loved the chance to create something special for the community he loved.

Poole has 2507 Lawrence Street listed for $314,990.
