Classic Urban Homes is having an incredible year! They are finalists in the 2016 ARC Awards in seven categories, including Custom Builder of the Year, and this past weekend they were able to hand over the keys of a new mortgage-free home to a wounded U.S. Army veteran and his family. How are they able to do so much and give back at the same time? A very dedicated staff that believes in teamwork.
Jane and Michael Turner started Classic Urban Homes in 2005 to offer “Building for the way people really live.” Not only do they use this philosophy with every custom and speculative home they build, it was also their mission statement when designing and building this home for the Sackett family.
U.S. Army Staff Sgt. James H. Sackett served for over 20 years in the armed forces, was deployed twice to Iraq, and spent over two years overseas serving our country. The eight-month process was a partnership with The Dallas Builders Association and Operation FINALLY HOME — what an incredible gift to a family that has sacrificed so much for all of us.
The decorated war veteran had many achievements including being awarded a Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, six Army Achievement Medals, and two Iraqi Campaign Medals. Now home with his wife, Sandra, and five daughters, he recently graduated from Central Texas College with an associate’s degree in criminal justice and is working as a detention officer.
In 2008 while deployed to Baghdad, Sgt. Sackett was severely injured by an improvised explosive device while out on patrol. Sackett continues to receive treatment for his injuries at the Dallas VA Medical Center. This new home will give the Sackett family a safe and secure place, a shelter from uncertainty.
The home is located in Oak Point, and is a beautiful four-bedroom home with large kitchen and living areas — perfect for this large family.
Phil Crone, the executive director of the Dallas Builders Association, emceed the ribbon cutting and shared how committed the members of the Dallas Builders Association are to providing homes for our veterans in need. The entire homebuilding community came together to make this home a reality and to provide the materials needed.
The Sacketts received one more surprise before they were able to tour their new home — Woodbridge Golf Club presented the family with a check for $10,000 which was raised at their annual golf tournament benefiting local veterans.
The Turners gave a tour of the new home, and there were lots of hugs and appreciation from all. The Sacketts are also involved in giving back — besides being involved in his community, he is active in the Wounded Warrior Project and works with the Black Lions, a group that is involved with helping lower the veteran suicide rate.
