Electrical work is a dicey DIY situation. It’s best to consult the pros when dealing with a home’s wiring.

When it comes to electricity at home, there are lots of Do’s and Don’ts.

Today’s standards for electrical appliances and home wiring are designed to keep us from hurting ourselves, much more so than in the past, but it’s important to remember that electricity is dangerous. If you have an electrical problem that can’t be solved by turning it off and then on again, the best bet is to call an electrician.

Here are some electrical issues home inspectors found that are good for homeowners to know.

1. Don’t Install Outdoor Lights Close to The Pool

Inspector Alex is doing some home improvement and came home to find the electrician didn’t follow proper installation guidelines

2. Do Use a Voltage Tester

Here you can see inspector Luis finds a seriously hot electrical panel. This is a great tool to keep handy for times when you need to check the panel box, or before touching loose wires.

3. Don’t Block Access to the Electrical Panel

Here inspector Brian shows some guidelines for panel box placement.
