One of the things I love most about Fort Worth is its preservationist instinct. Older neighborhoods, the venerable Westside enclaves of Westover Hills, Rivercrest, and Crestwood are largely as they were built. Ditto the old Southside Neighborhoods of Mistletoe Heights, Berkeley Place, Fairmount, and my own Ryan Place.

There are, however, a few neighborhoods like West Beyer. These are spots where, lured by lower costs and a choice Westside location, buyers often raze the small existing bungalows and build, with mixed success, larger and more modern structures. A friend who lived in the area cattily dubbed the area “Westover Leftover.”

A Contemporary Served Hot

This week’s Fort Worth Friday can be counted a thumping success on many levels, beginning at the curb. Tucked behind high hedges, the front yard becomes a private garden. A normally inconveniently placed tree is converted into a central axis around which the landscape is disposed.

Simplicity and quality. Simple symmetry and high-end, custom windows and doors establish a disciplined contemporary elegance that pervades the entire residence. The cool blue glass tile surrounding the strong metal-and-glass front door will reappear inside.

Inside the 3,500-square-foot four-bedroom, three-and-one-half bath house the ambiance is airy and light suffused. High ceilings and strategic fenestration augment the open plan.

At the front and to the right is a living area. To the left is an office that can be closed with custom pocket doors. Throughout the house, near-natural white oak floors change their course to define specific areas.

The heart of the house is the kitchen/breakfast/den. Notice the reappearance of the cool blue glass tile. The kitchen features a large island/bar and a chef’s-grade, six-burner cooktop.

Although open to the kitchen, the den feels more elegant than the living area at the front. It centers on a fireplace that adds warmth.

Stepping down, on the first level, one arrives at the primary suite with access to a private patio. The bathroom features dual sinks double shower and, oh, there’s that comely tile again.

The remaining three bedrooms are on level two, which has a third open living area.

At back is a multi-level hardscape deck with a plunge pool/spa and complete outdoor kitchen.

Martha Williams of Williams Trew Realty has priced 5224 El Campo Avenue at $750,000.
