Furnishing a dorm room just might be the ultimate exercise in downsizing. Let’s face it. The reality of campus life is spending a whole lot of time in very few square feet.
The good news is small doesn’t necessarily mean cramped. Or boring. The key? Finding just the right balance of style, comfort, and function.
Wall Art
Just in time for back to school, art website No Boring Walls is launching new work from award-winning illustrator Rob Wilson. Prints depicting Texas football are from a commissioned series featuring Lone Star State icons.
“The client wanted images that were unmistakably Texan,” said Wilson’s rep and No Boring Walls owner Renee Rhyner. “Given that Rob grew up in West Texas, it was a natural fit.”

Designer Geoffrey Henning’s edgy fashion illustrations or artist Carolyn Ridsdale’s cool collages will up the style quotient of any dorm room.
“The idea behind No Boring Walls was to make interesting art affordable,” said Rhyner. “I’ve been representing amazingly talented artists for years. I thought, why not make their work available on a broader scale?”
Pieces come unframed or framed. Rhyner recommends the latter. “You’d be surprised how a simple frame elevates the look – not to mention will make the room feel so much less dorm-like.”
Creative Storage
Smaller accommodations call for clever storage solutions. The goal? No wasted space.
Look for multitaskers like ottomans that serve as extra seating or trunks that double as a bedside table. Other space-saving options include over-the-door closet organizers and underbed bags and baskets.
The Basics
When it comes to towels, Norwex consultant Barbara Beasley is a huge fan of microfiber. “It’s lightweight, ultra-absorbent, and more durable than cotton.”
Microfiber also sports an antibacterial agent within the cloth that inhibits odor. “College kids are busy,” she said. “Towels will stay fresher, longer, plus they’ll need laundering less often,” she said.
Memory foam toppers will make even twin beds a comfier place to crash. And weighted blankets are known to have a calming, Zen-like effect. According to Good Housekeeping Textile Lab experts, cozying up with one can “feel like a firm hug without anyone actually touching you.”
More on the must-have list: a hand-held steamer, noise-canceling earbuds, shower shoes, clip-on reading light, and portable lap desk. A mini fridge will also come in handy for late-night snacks and drinks.

Ease into campus life with these covetable not-so-essentials.
