Sleek and Modern, This Metropolitan Unit Will Make a Family Want to Move to Downtown Dallas

Built in 1974, it was once home to federal offices of the region’s health, education, and welfare departments. But now 1200 Main is the “Metropolitan,” one of the swankiest commercial-to-residential conversions in downtown Dallas.

I had a hard time imagining what this building would be like as a condo tower when Rockwood Realty purchased the building in 2005 and hired Corgan & Associates to transform it. I mean, it’s brown. Brown is not sexy at all.

And yet, it is a fabulous building today, and this unit is definitely worthy of being our High Caliber Home of the Week. A two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit with tons of style and great paint makes wonderful use of the floorplan. And as this unit shows, this is a great building for a family. Trust me, when you see inside, you’ll want to make sure you’ve called Lisa Peters at Caliber Home Loans so you can sail through closing. Jump for more photos of this great building.

This is a wonderful location for families, thanks to the adjacent Belo Garden. Of course, you have to walk around the wall constructed between the building and the park, but it’s a great spot to walk your dog or let your kids burn off some energy before dinner. The building also has a lovely pool and amenity deck, a fitness center, a clubroom, and a concierge.

Unit 409 is a two-bedroom, two-bath floor plan with 1,448 square feet marketed by Shelle Craig, who’s with the incomparable Becky Frey, for $320,000. While the kitchen looks great and the bathrooms are lovely, there’s plenty of room for you to put your own stamp on it.

My first instinct is to find out what’s under the carpet. If it’s concrete that isn’t worth polishing, consider putting down some of that amazing tile that looks indistinguishable from hardwoods. That would definitely up the sexy factor. Otherwise you’re going to love the gallery hanging system (I have one and it is the best!), the stainless steel kitchen, the convenient office area off of the entry, and the huge windows in both bedrooms.

As it turns out, a brown building can be transformed into a sexy high-rise. Who would have thought?
