city-modern-5-flyer-2014-06-12-copy-2_1_orig-e1573867170859In bum-us-out news, City Modern 5 is closing its doors after 6 years making your mid-century dreams come true.

They’ll be hosting a liquidation sale all weekend long at their 1112 S. Akard Street location. Since they’re typically an appointment-only showroom, this is a double huge deal.

city-modern-5-flyer-2014-06-12-copy-2_1_orig-e1573867170859Hours are Friday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 16 and Sunday, Nov. 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. They call out that it’s street parking only so pack your quarters or debit card because nothing needs quarters anymore except downtown parking meters.

If you can’t make it by Monday, no sweat. Owner Omar Akaweih said he’ll remain open by appointment for a bit and he’ll definitely be participating in the 17th Annual Cedars Open Studio Tour on Nov. 23.

When you do make it by, you’ll have access to an incredible collection of Knoll, Herman Miller, Paul McCobb and more. The sale isn’t limited to furniture and case goods, either. There will also be amazing pottery, glassware, and lamps for sale, too.

Cash is preferred though debit cards and credit cards are accepted with a 4 percent fee added for credit cards. It’s a cash and carry situation so bring your burliest friends and rent a truck if you’re in it for a haul.

city-modern-5-flyer-2014-06-12-copy-2_1_orig-e1573867170859City Modern 5 opened in 2013 and it’s been a go-to for local designers ever since. As for why they’re closing, Akaweih said the building was sold and the new owner has other plans that will likely include a rent hike.

Akaweih said he’s not quite sure what he’ll do next, but will continue to sell pieces online and through Instagram under the City Modern 5 name at least for the meantime. He said if he does reopen in the future, he’ll likely change the name, but he’s not thinking that far ahead just yet. For now, it’s time to chill out just a bit.

Earlier this year, Akaweih’s former partner left the business to return to the corporate world as a video producer. Over the years, the two created quite the reputation largely in part to their enthusiasm, knowledge and appreciation of the furniture of the mid-century era.
