What’s in a name? In the case of the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University, it’s a good time for an update.

On Jan. 1, 2021, the center will return to its given identity – the Texas Real Estate Research Center.

“We are reassuming and reasserting our claim to our official name,” says Gary Maler, the center’s executive director.

Also, the name’s revival ushers in the center’s 50th anniversary year. It’s also good for search optimization because “real estate center” yields more than 2.9 billion possibilities.

The center was created by an act of the state legislature in 1971 to meet the needs of multiple audiences, including the real estate industry, instructors, researchers, and the public. The name was unofficially shortened in 1986 to assist for marketing purposes.

“The operating environment has changed over the years,” Maler says. “We are no longer the best-kept secret in Texas. Omitting the word ‘research’ from our name has spawned imitators and caused confusion.”

The center is part of the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University in College Station.
