Prairie Cottage in Winnetka Heights Has Whimsical Intelligent Style

Once upon a time, a clever architect and a talented interior designer bought a 1927 Prairie cottage in Winnetka Heights and, of course, they completely transformed it. Now a lucky buyer can reap the benefits of their hard work and nab this move-in ready cutie at 110 N. Edgefield in this hotter than hot neighborhood if they move very fast.

Winnetka Heights is a designated historic district, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Oak Cliff, and has one of the most impressive collections of turn-of-the-century homes in Dallas. It’s within walking distance of the insanely fun Bishop Arts restaurant and shopping scene, and minutes to Stevens Park Golf Course. If you have kids, there’s an extremely involved PTA at Rosemont Elementary, and W. E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy is a hop, skip, and a jump away.

This two-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,858-square-foot home was beautifully transformed by owners J.P. and Erin Hossley. “The front two rooms were very period, and exactly what we wanted,” J.P. said. “We gutted from there.”

The foundation was redone and new electrical wiring and fixtures from Schoolhouse Electric were installed. “If you want a modern take on period light fixtures, this is the resource,” J.P. said.

All of the plumbing was updated, including the addition of a tankless water heater. This allowed the couple to capture wasted space in the kitchen and provided a new home for the refrigerator. “We can run five different plumbing fixtures all at once,” J.P. said. If you’ve ever run out of hot water in the middle of a shower, you know this is an important feature. Fixtures in both the bathrooms and kitchen are top-of-the-line Grohe, which last forever.

“Erin wanted a white kitchen and a turquoise sink,” JP said. “The countertops in both the kitchen and bathroom are quartz.” They installed a double shower, or what we like to call a party shower, in the master bathroom and a double vanity.

“As you can see from the photos, they have such a wonderfully whimsical yet intelligent style,” listing agent Paul Kirkpatrick, with David Griffin & Company, said. That style is on display at their amazing store, neighborhood in Bishop Arts, where they serve up architecture and design at their “design bar,” much like a coffee shop serves up lattes and macchiatos. Over the past four years the couple has worked with over 400 clients and brought countless vintage homes back to life, including 121 N. Winnetka  our High Caliber Home of the Week featured earlier this month.
