After one of the most contentious debates the Dallas City Council has endured in recent history, the short-term rental issue came to a head last week. Four years of debate ended after more than four hours of testimony from residents. Finally, a resolution was reached, banning STRs within the residential neighborhoods of Dallas.

For many, this came as a devastating blow to their small businesses. For others, the restrictions were a welcome relief from the raucousness of wild parties and random renters. Regardless of this outcome, there’s no denying the huge demand Dallas has for these alternative accommodations. As companies like Airbnb fight for ground in the residential realm, one company is capitalizing on the craze in a new way.

A Short-Term Rental Solution Skirting the Suburbs

Orion Haus is a home-sharing solution designed for the multifamily market. Essentially, they’re doing for apartments what Airbnb does for residential homes. By partnering with building management and providing an intuitive app experience, Orion Haus allows tenants to capitalize off of their apartments by opening them to travelers.

“With the average American spending over 50 percent of their household income on rent, this is important now more than ever,” said Kanan Whited IV, co-founder of Orion Haus. “By targeting apartment complexes that cater more toward professionals, consultants, or those who may travel more, this is a great amenity. It allows renters to let their apartment work for them.”

Right now, Orion Haus has locations across the Sunbelt with properties in Florida, Arizona, and Louisiana. But, like so many in the multifamily business, they have their sights set on Dallas. And with limited options for STRs, this city is ripe for a revolution in multifamily home-sharing.

“The recently passed laws pertaining to single-family homes have ignited conversations about urban living,” Whited said. “This is where Orion Haus steps in, providing an innovative platform that transforms apartments into opportunities. We enable Dallas apartment residents to harness the potential of the sharing economy, offsetting their living costs without compromises.”

Apartments Mean Opportunities

Briget Nelson is an Orion Haus resident in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a firsthand account of finding financial freedom through home-sharing.

“Orion Haus has been a game changer,” Nelson said. “As a consultant, I’m hardly ever home. But thanks to Orion Haus, my apartment doesn’t sit empty anymore. The app takes care of everything, from bookings to security, so I can focus on my work without worrying about a thing.”

As runaway inflation and an eccentric economic climate cut away at the budgets of young professionals, Briget feels Orion Haus affords her an extra element of financial freedom. The app allows her to leverage her living space as an asset to offset rising costs.

“It’s a financial lifeline in today’s crazy housing market!” Nelson said. “Being able to cover my rent with the extra income from home-sharing is a huge weight off my shoulders. It’s like having my own side hustle without all the hassle.”

The Bigger Picture

The debate between STR operators and residents has typically been a two-sided argument where agendas clash over home values, property rights, and public safety. Orion Haus seeks to change this with a solution that promotes prosperity, community, and connections.

“The recent legislation in Dallas serves to underline the alignment between Orion Haus and the city’s aspirations,” Whited said. “Together, we can usher in a new era of urban living, making Dallas a city that’s more vibrant, connected, and financially secure.”

It’s a tall order, especially coming off the heels of such a hot-button issue. However, Orion Haus remains optimistic that they can set an example for the next era of home-sharing in Dallas.

“We’re not just launching a service,” Whited said. “We’re embarking on a transformative journey for Dallas — a journey of innovation, empowerment, and community growth.”
