Kips Bay Decorator Show House Scales Back Run Dates Due to ‘Unforeseen Circumstances’

The show house must go on — but not for very long.

The saga at 9250 Meadowbrook continues, as organizers for this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House announced online Thursday that, due to “unforeseen circumstances,” the home will be open from Sept. 22 through Sept. 25. It was originally slated for a month-long run, from Sept. 22 through Oct. 23.

The ticketed event costs up to $300 per person and benefits Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, which provides educational and developmental programs for New York City children. Local beneficiaries include The Crystal Charity Ball and Dwell with Dignity. Since its founding in 1973, Kips Bay Show Houses have raised $29 million.

Plagued with Problems

A red flag went up in late August, in the form of a “stop work order” from the City of Dallas. A few days later, the sign was down and organizers of the charity event told Daltxrealestate.com that the show would go on as planned in the month-long run.

It appeared builder Elliott Perry of Hudson Construction cleared the necessary building permits to continue renovation on the home. Still, it didn’t stop neighbors from complaining about having a show home in their midst.

Former Dallas City Council District 13 candidate Leland Burk, who also serves as president of the Inwood Northwest Homeowners Association, told us last month that show homes are not permitted in residential areas.

“The city attorney is not approving use of the home for a 31-day commercial fund-raising venue,” Burk said. “The neighborhood is residential and such use is not a single-family use.”

But last year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House was just a block away, also in Preston Hollow, at 5138 Deloache. The home was shown for a month, from Sept. 24 to Oct. 24, 2021.

Kips Bay organizers have said those who already purchased tickets for a date no longer being offered can request a refund or make it a donation.
