Art should make people happy, according to Megan Trottier. (Mimi Perez)

Megan Trottier has a spirit as vibrant as the art she creates. The charismatic mother of three took up painting during the pandemic, posted her work on Instagram, and has never looked back.

“How much can a person binge shows, eat, and drink wine?” she said, laughing. “This was my way to be girly and escape watching Netflix all the time.”

The result is a collection of colorful acrylic canvases, trays, coasters, pillows, and other decorative goods Megan promotes via her IG feed and website. She remembered her first post in January 2021.

“I was like ‘I can’t believe I’m doing this.’ I was never a big social media person. It’s wild what Instagram can do.”

It turns out that her business, Megan Jane Home, is like a fourth child — the girl Megan never had. Her kids, all boys, range in age from four to 17.

“My life was always all blue and plaids. If I was going to have a business it was going to be pink and shiny and happy,” she said.

First up in the collection: Hearts, the perfect antidote to the dreariness of COVID. “They’re pretty and easy to draw. Then I thought, let’s make it colorful. The art just kind of took on a life of its own.”

It doesn’t hurt that the camera loves her.

A recent reel shows the self-taught artist at work in her studio — a dedicated area just off the garage of the family’s new Preston Hollow residence:

“We bought the cutest home with a THIRD CAR garage. You heard me, I officially have my own true space,” she posted.

All the better to grow her burgeoning business. “I always thought work was just to bring in money. And now, being able to be creative too is just so inspiring.”

More on Megan

She has West Texas roots. “I was born, raised, and went to college there.”

When it comes to selling, MJ Home isn’t her first rodeo. Her CV includes stints in pharmaceutical and medical sales.

The teachers at her sons’ school know her as “the art mom.”

She’s an organization junkie. Think spices, snacks, and shoes.

Megan even loves color in closets: a well-organized shoe closet by SOS Home Organization. (@meganjanehome)

Talent she wishes she had: Hip hop dancing.

Guilty pleasures: Central Market margarita mix. And she’s a sucker for a serial killer. “I love deep, dark shows. My husband is always like, ‘I don’t know how the hell you watch this.’”

Her work has been featured in the Dallas Galleria.

She’s available for commissions and special orders.

“I was introduced to Megan by my daughter-in-law, Erika, who lives in California,” said Daltxrealestate.com founder & publisher Candy Evans. “My grandkids picked out colors and Megan created adorable custom paintings for their rooms. They loved seeing the art from start to finish. It just so happened that Megan was not only in Texas, but a few blocks from our house. The far-reaching power of social media is amazing!”
