Sure Getting Shaken Up Over on Shook

This is a bit of a California iconic home, but wait until you hear about the location: 7142 Shook Road, about two blocks away from the western edge of White Rock Lake. The lot is .21 of an acre, that’s almost one quarter acre of trees, topography and trellises. The home is located on a hill and the nature views from the abundant windows are what homeowners everywhere dream about. Built in 1954, the frame ranch with lower level is a home Loretta Young would have loved to float around in, drawing her white-gloved finger over the woodwork.

It reminds me very much of the homes I see up in Palo Alto or Redwood City, where my son lives. It’s probably like the homes many a Toyota employee will be leaving as they ditch California to move to North Texas. There this home would carry a $2 million price tag. Here, it is a reasonable $549,000.

The home is 2508 square feet with three bedrooms, two full baths, two living areas and one fireplace. It is 1950’s mid-century all over. There are lots of windows for natural sunlight, and beautiful hardwood floors that will last a century. The kitchen has been updated somewhat with tasteful paint and new stainless steel appliances. What do you think about that castle blue? I like it, but then, I’m nuts about blue. I also see no granite, only clean laminate which I’m sure has been updated since 1954 –maybe? The master bath is rather an open deal there, no need for modesty. But the curved shower frame is quite charming. The second living area appears to be a converted garage, but the original rooms have those soaring A-frame lines and clerestory windows that were such a hallmark of 50’s architecture.

The biggest surprise for any California buyer will be the back yard oasis with swimming pool. Yep, that’s what you get in Texas dears: 2500 square feet, decently updated bathrooms and kitchen, great floor plan and pool. OK, so maybe this place needs a little more help with updating and paint, some of the flooring and a new master bathroom that doesn’t let it all hang out, if you catch my drift. I love it, and would convert the second living area back into a climate-controlled garage that doubles as a rec room as well as the cleanest garage in Texas, like the one at the Naked Sushi house.

Listed with Scott Carlson, Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International and I was not kidding on price: $549,000. I can hear the footsteps from Cali coming already!
