So we’re not exactly dancing on ceilings, but ceilings will not be ignored. We’re way past the popcorn ceilings, those thick, bumpy, and sometimes even sparkly ceiling textures so popular from the 1950s to the ‘80s. Also known as “cottage cheese” or “acoustic ceilings,” they were created to quiet the noise. Supposedly New Yorker Francis J. Greenburger invented a spray-on mix for ceilings, winning him awards for this work.
Fast forward. We no longer want those ceilings. God bless all the people who hand-scraped that junk off their houses lest they be embarrassed by their oh-so-dated appearance, but we digress. Instead of popcorn, ceilings increasingly are design elements in a home. Feature walls? Fine, but feature ceilings just could be the new home décor frontier.
