If you live in North Texas, you know that “winter” can mean pretty much anything. But we do get sudden freezes, even snow, and of course, a big Texas storm can happen anytime.
There are some home maintenance tasks that are good to do during the winter to keep your home running smoothly (and avoid home inspectors posting about you on real estate websites).
Look For Wires Too Close to Branches & Structures
Take a walk around the perimeter of your property to see where the wires are, and take note of any that are close to tree branches, the roof, or other structures. If you have one like this, make sure you have a strict “no dunking” rule. Or you might choose a different spot for your basketball hoop.
Check Your Shower Caulking
A shower pan should last several years at a minimum, and up to 10 years or more with proper maintenance. Caulking needs to be replaced every 5-8 years, so check the caulking every so often to make sure it’s nice and sealed. And periodically walk your property to look for slow leaks around the perimeter beam: a telltale sign of a shower pan leak.
Properly Maintain Storage Areas
This is a great one to tackle now because you’ve likely just put away all your holiday stuff. Some people have organized storage areas and others have … less organized storage areas.
As we addressed in another article, you’re always asking for trouble with big piles of stuff. In this video, the homeowners have actual structural damage because of their storage.
