Preservation Dallas has provided a bright spot for Dallas in a challenging year. Earlier this month, we reported on their recognition by the National Trust for Historic Preservation with the Trustee’s Award for their advocacy and education efforts. To be recognized at this level means our local efforts are held up as examples and inspiration for others.

Tomorrow night, Wednesday, November 18, Preservation Dallas will present their 21st annual Preservation Achievement Awards virtually. When we consider what makes a city great, historic preservation is high on the list. It adds enormously to our character, beauty, national visibility, and it makes a lasting impression on our visitors. In addition to the preservation projects, several special recognition awards will be presented for contributions to historic preservation by a person or an organization.

The 2020 Award recipients this year include 710 Dumas, The Gaston, Lobello House, Green House, Marcus House, 211 N. Rosemont Avenue, Mayor Sergeant House, Bella Villa Apartments, Bowlski’s – Lakewood Theater, Eagle Ford School, Samuell Grand Regional Family Aquatics Center, Sharrock Niblo Barn, Tyler Station, the UNT Dallas College of Law – Old Municipal Building, and the new Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum.

The Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum Boxcar project will receive the prestigious Gail Thoma Patterson Award for outstanding restoration of a historic resource.

The City of Dallas Archives will receive the Craftsmanship Award, Carolyn Brown and the Tenth Street Neighborhood Resident’s Organization will each receive a Spirit of Preservation Award, and the Finding Little Egypt Project will receive the Education Award.

The awards will also include a special tribute to the City of Dallas Park & Recreation Department for all that they have done to preserve Dallas’ historic parks and the historic features within them. The Department has received the most Preservation Achievement Honor Awards than any other organization in the city, and we applaud their list of stellar projects. Past honorees have included Merriman Anderson Architects, Downtown Dallas Inc., the City of Dallas, Sixth Floor Museum, Bishop Arts District, Swiss Avenue Historic District, Meadows Foundation, and Matthews Southwest. You can view past Honoree tribute videos, award recipients, and photograph slideshows below.
