Can you believe this 1971 contemporary ranch is now considered historic? I had to call up David Preziosi, the Executive Director at Preservation Dallas, for confirmation, and he assured me, “The 1970s is the next frontier of historic preservation.” So think about that, original shag carpet and metallic wallpaper are now preservation-worthy!

The ranch-style home has always found favor since it originated in California in the mid-1930s. However, the 1970s saw architects taking the form and making it a lot more exciting. They started raising the roof pitch, creating dramatic entries, adding skylights and envelope-pushing stylistic details.

So much of what inspired them 50 years ago has become cool again. As my mom used to say, “Nothing goes out of style, you just have to wait a minute, and it’s back.” She was right. Who thought shag carpet, bold wallpaper, and floating staircases would make a comeback, but they all have.

Architect Peter Paul Manos and builder Al David Rosensweig brought this contemporary ranch to life in Russwood Acres, and it must have been the talk of the neighborhood.

With a grand entry, dramatic floor-to-ceiling fireplaces (including the original stone fireplace in the principal bedroom), enormous picture windows, terrazzo floors, and a round breakfast room, it was, by every standard, entirely cutting-edge.

This stylish 5,964-square-foot contemporary ranch was tastefully updated in 2012 to ensure the 70s vibe continued while providing the contemporary kitchens and bathrooms we can’t live without now.

There are five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and a powder bath, so it’s a perfect family home.
