It’s the start of 2023, and a lot of people are making resolutions for their health, but what about their homes?
If being trapped indoors for two years during the global COVID-19 pandemic taught us anything, it’s what we can’t stand about our current accommodations. While many people have likely taken up paintbrushes and circular saws in an effort to make some adjustments, plenty of American homeowners are still dissatisfied with their digs.
I mean, after months of seeing that worn-out carpet, the dingy cabinets, and being harangued by a nosy neighbor, and being crammed into your makeshift home office, you’re likely ready to change your home. If that’s the case, you’re not alone. HomeAdvisor surveyed more than 1,000 American homeowners and found that nearly a third of them think their home is too small, more than half spend most of their time at home in the living room, and a great majority believe that leaving a much-beloved neighborhood is a dealbreaker.
What Americans Love And Hate About Their Homes
According to the survey results from HomeAdvisor, respondents’ biggest problem with their homes is the inadequate size (23 percent), followed by layout and distance from friends and family (11 percent).
Specifically, respondents dislike certain parts of their homes, namely functional spaces and storage spaces like bathrooms (23 percent), laundry rooms (21 percent), basements (14 percent), and garages (10 percent). Nearly half of homeowner respondents said they don’t like these spaces because they’re too small, with 27 percent saying the layout is poor.
Overall, survey respondents love their home’s location, with 59 percent saying they like their neighborhoods. But homeowners’ opinions about their home’s location vary: 45 percent of respondents say it’s perfect, while 51 percent consider it “just OK,” and 3 percent say their location is bad.
The other aspects people love most about their homes are its affordability, with 53 percent of respondents, and size, with 44 percent. But not all survey respondents agree that the size of their home is a positive quality. While 64 percent of respondents say the size is just right, 29 percent say their homes are too small, and 5 percent say their homes are too big.
What Americans Would Change About Their Homes
Overall, our surveyed homeowners are not afraid to tackle a DIY renovation project, with 76 percent saying they would complete one.
Renovating the bathroom is the top priority for respondents who want to update their homes (21 percent). Meanwhile, 16 percent of respondents want to renovate the basement, and 14 percent chose the laundry room and garage.
What is HomeAdvisor: It’s an app and website that connects homeowners with tradesmen in home renovation.
Report review: Kicking off the year (and our resolutions) was easy after seeing that so many other homeowners are ready to DIY their way into 2023, and the infographics drive the point home and the survey into four-bunny rabbit hole territory.🐇🐇🐇🐇
