Size Matters in this Texas-Sized Historic Landmark Home

Abbott-ExteriorThe Abbott House lives up to the bragging rights of historic Texas. The distinctive three-story Victorian is not only big in size, big in style, and big in history, it’s also big in value.

Located on a large corner lot in Hillsboro, Texas – the county seat of Hill County – this 4,612-square-feet landmark home is a classic and comfortable blend of sweeping historic elegance and recent modern upgrades. In addition to three living areas, a formal dining room, and third-floor unfinished attic, interior features range from four bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and a stainless-steel kitchen with gas stove-top and oven to multiple staircases, four decorative fireplaces, and handicap accessibility.

But the exterior sets the stage for a welcoming vibe with a veranda wrapping halfway around the house, an octagon turret with three levels of windows, and a fenced gunite swimming pool that’s perfect for entertaining or just basking in the Texas sun.

In 1986, the Abbott House was designated a Texas Historic Landmark. Joseph (Jo) Abbott and his wife Rowena Sturgis Abbott purchased the land in 1883 and built the house in 1898. A year later, the Abbotts deeded the property to their son and daughter-in-law, James and Nancy Abbott, after the birth of the young couple’s first child.

Originally the house was a T plan, but after additions in 1907 and 1918, the architecture transitioned to classical-bungalow style.
