Michael Delgado believes that art and the real estate business can be a wonderful combination.
After all, most people love amazing artwork. And who doesn’t want to live in a beautiful home?
“I don’t have a background in arts professionally, but I do have a professional background in business development for a luxury setting, which encourages you to express yourself through art,” Delgado said.
“Artsy is a very subjective word, but I believe that whatever makes someone feel comfortable and confident can be art — either through how they dress, what they put onto a canvas, or in real estate context, how they choose to decorate their home.”
Delgado is an owner, acting vice president, and agent with Standard Real Estate. He is in his fourth year in the business, selling homes from Richardson, where he lives, all the way to Austin.
“For me, success isn’t about staying in one area out of preference,” Delgado said. “It’s being able to earn the trust of people everywhere. So I believe that because I have sold homes, and helped represent buyers in vast areas, my reach of trust goes further out than I ever would have imagined.”
Delgado discussed his love of art, incorporating it into his business, preparing for his first marathon, and more, in an interview with Candy’sDirt.com.
Can you explain how you can envision something better in a house?
Most art is typically inspired by previous artistry. When I walk into a home, my experience in real estate allows me to pull together all the beautiful things I see into one cohesive unit. I do have some experience in home renovations as I have done multiple of my own home renovations, but I also walk with my clients through certain design aspects of their home. When we’re touring, if renovations are a part of their plans I am just able to see what can be changed and where and at what point. It also helps that I am somewhat aware of renovation costs.
Do you come from a family connected to real estate in any way?
I don’t. I always thought real estate was the complete opposite of what I wanted to do in life. I never wanted to do anything 100 percent commission or anything sales. Well, here I am, ha!
How did you get into the business?
In that luxury setting, it involved being away from my family more than I wanted. I knew that if I worked as hard developing my own business as I did theirs, I could do great things. A friend mentioned I would be good at real estate and, after some thinking, I hopped in the deep end.
Does your approach help you get around the latest do-it-yourself apps for home buyers?
Technology can be a blessing or a curse based on each client’s use. I love how it’s given people the opportunity to pursue real estate interests. I am in education as much as I am in sales, so when I get to educate people it gives me a sense of being helpful. People don’t hire me to open a door for them. They hire me because they trust me to be honest with them and to educate them on what advice is worth listening to.
Word is that you are preparing for your first marathon?
The New York Marathon is actually my very first marathon. I know, go big or go home. What I have learned from my very short time training is that it’s important to pace yourself. You can come out running quicker miles and fade in the end, or you can come out with realistic expectations and win in the end.
Do you see a correlation between running the marathon and your career?
Winning is different things for different people. Winning for me looks like just completing the marathon. Like real estate, if you come out with no direction, you won’t go very far. Knowing the end goal will allow you to plan, process, and put in realistic work to get there.
Ebby worked until she was in her 100s. I plan to work as long as I am still enjoying real estate and able to give the best service to my clients. I have no plans to retire at 65. I am a firm believer that I will know when it is my time to retire and when I am ready.
