Mindy King’s Little Forest Hills Cottage Just Hit The Market

Doesn’t this house look like it belongs on the pages of a magazine??? Or a catalog? Well, hold on to your button because one of the owners is Mindy King, the design director (and stylist and many things) for Parachute. Yeah, the textiles company. Textile? Singular? Feels like it should be plural …

Anyway, this is the house she lives in with her husband and son, and here’s the timeline of how it came to be this undeniably amazing. In 2015, they purchased the house from a renovator. It was okaaaay, but in 2018, they did their first remodel, and then in 2020, right when the world shut down — though it had been scheduled for months and months — they added a second living area, a bedroom, and a utility room basically doubling the size of the house.

So wait, why are they leaving??? They’re headed to Asheville, N.C., where Mindy will open a sustainable shop called There There. She said it’d not been an active, we’re-working-toward-it goal, but it’s felt like the next step for her and her family for a while.

As for this drop-dead well-designed home, it’s in Little Forest Hills and was inspired by the warmth of the desert with its soft neutrals and light wood tones.

Mindy said the tile in the primary bathroom tile looks handmade with an imperfect edge. She loves the way it contrasts with the minimal light fixture. She also loves the fact that it came from a local company, Riad. Mindy said this tile was a bit of a splurge, but the way she justified it was by saying, “Hey, how much would a piece of art cost for that space?” Because essentially that’s what it is.

Another one of her favorite rooms is the sunroom that’s lined with low storage around the perimeter. There’s also a killer fireplace in there and Mindy said she wishes she could have used it more.

My favorite thing they did to the house? They arched all the doorways. Hello.

Because I love Mindy’s style and had an opportunity to ask her about her favorite shops, here we go … Hawkins New York, Virginia Sin, East Fork, The Floral Society (for candles and incense), Parachute (obviously), and locals Corrie Pocta, Amy Opsal, Kelly Christine Photo. Of course, if you want to be inspired by the one and only Mindy, follow her on Instagram @gatheringwool.home.

Final thing: Mindy is an incredibly talented photographer and in the past, she’s taken listing photos for agents. Instead of payment, she’s always had the agents donate to a charity. Great taste, great house, and a great human. She’s the real deal, gang.
