Preservation Dallas Partners on The Greenland Hills Centennial Home Tour

Greenland Hills

Greenland Hills is celebrating its centennial this year! Known as the original M Streets, the neighborhood was developed from 98 acres of the Bennett farm in 1923 by brothers Frank and Fletcher McNeny. They were smart businessmen and ensured the Interurban streetcar and bus lines extended into their development which attracted young professionals looking for affordable housing and proximity to town.

Greenland Hills formed the M Streets East Conservation District in 2003 to preserve the original architecture. Although predominantly filled with Tudor Revival homes, there are actually seven different architectural styles represented, including original prototypes of modern. Today, it is one of the most charming neighborhoods in the city. The residents are ardent preservationists, having recently begun applying for recognition by the Texas Historic Commission.

Partnering With Preservation Dallas

Preservation Dallas hosts a Fall Home Tour every year, so when the idea of a partnership was floated it created an interest in further neighborhood collaborations.

“Preservation Dallas is very excited to be partnering with Greenland Hills for their Centennial Home Tour in celebration of the neighborhood’s historic 100 years,” Event Committee Chair Claudia Worme said. “This tour is the first of multiple neighborhood Centennial Celebrations that we plan to partner with to further Preservation Dallas’s community engagement through involvement with and support of historic neighborhoods.”

It’s a perfect collaboration because no organization serves our historic community like Preservation Dallas. They provide in-depth information, educational opportunities, and resources to our homeowners, Realtors, architects, builders, and developers and broker creative solutions for endangered historic properties.

“Partnerships like this give Preservation Dallas an opportunity to spotlight areas in the city where people may not have a strong sense of the neighborhood,” Director of Programs Matt Weinstein said.

This year’s event will be on Saturday, October 14th, and include homes that are outstanding examples of preservation and restoration.

The public can purchase tickets for The Greenland Hills Centennial Home Tour below and remember early bird discounted ticket sales end September 30th.
