In this Daltxrealestate.com Reporter’s Notebook feature, Associate Editor Shelby Skrhak explains the writing and research process she clearly loves for estate sales and a fabulous one this weekend.
Estate sales are like an archeological dig into somebody’s life story from the objects they or their loved ones leave behind. For Daltxrealestate.com, I’ve started covering Dallas’ most fabulous estate sales like the estate sale for legendary Neiman’s director Derrill Osborn that was grand not only because his eclectic sense of style was revered around the world, but because it was largely unedited. Yes, some things were taken to auction, but by and large, Osborn’s Wycliff townhome was a time capsule of his life.
Writing about it was made easy by the fact that much of his home had been photographed personally and professionally, so we could match up an Asian-inspired red secretary for sale with a Texas Monthly article that described how it was custom made for him in Beijing.
But this North Preston Hollow estate sale hosted by Jose Tamayo and Stephen King of Dallas Estate Sellers has me dying with curiosity and wanting to put a fabulous name to the face of this magnificent house and collection inside.
Dallas Estate Sellers calls this one of the best sales of the year, a true collector’s dream sale. Collector of what? Everything, literally. When Jose Tamayo and his Dallas Estate Sellers team were faced with the daunting task of pricing a collection this diverse and extensive, these local experts called in the national experts from Antiques Road Show.
This personal collection of Scandinavian and international pottery and glass is displayed beautifully inside this early 70s contemporary architecture home on Leachman Circle near Inwood and Royal. It’s a modern Shed-style home that has floor to ceiling windows that bring the outdoors in and clerestory windows of the midcentury, though the 1974-built home’s not on the market. Actually it’s never been on the market. It’s a two-story, 3,832 square foot home on .74 acres with four bedrooms, and three and half-baths. Dallas County assessed it at $1.2 million this year, and it’s been owned by one man, a UT Southwestern cardiologist since at least 1999, as far back as DCAD records go.
Of course, every estate sale tells a story. But it’s rare for an estate seller to include the name of the estate owner in the sale description, opting instead for a light mention of his or her cultural significance. They might say a long-time symphony conductor in Richardson, a long-married couple of world travelers with no heirs, or a former Coca-Cola executive who had the most exclusive Coca-Cola collectibles— all of these real sales that I’ve browsed in 2019. For the sale that’s slated this weekend at 11211 Leachman Circle, no clues here though, except an old copy of Dallas Life Magazine featuring art collector Wendy Reeves. A relative of the art philanthropist? Nope, just a man and a collective of his, his late wife’s, and his parents’ tastes.

Furniture
Tulip tables are a signature of MCM furniture, but if you weren’t around for its first incarnation, you might not know that Dallas-based Burke Furniture Co. manufactured these tables “in the style of” the original Tulip for the masses in the 1960s. The Finnish-American maker Ero Saarinene first designed the famous Tulip collection for Knoll furniture in 1955, specifically to clean up “the slum of legs” under the typical American dining table, but they were pricey. Today Chairish.com lists vintage Burke tables from $400 for a small, slightly chipped side table, to $1,000+ for great condition. A vintage Saarinene dining table will set you back anywhere from $2,500 to $5,500.
