Some Hidden Wallpaper Brings Joy and Inspiration for This Perry Heights Tudor

When designer and renovator Melinda Pope came across this 1925 Tudor in Perry Heights, she fell in love. This beauty at 4412 N. Hall Street, listed by Mohammed Jaber of Compass RE Texas, is featured as this week’s Inwood Home of the Week, sponsored by Inwood National Bank.

The swift lines that contrast its stalwart brick are a striking visual cue of this prominent home style in Perry Heights, located near Wycliff and the Dallas North Tollway in Oak Lawn. Today, it’s one of the dwindling single-family residential neighborhoods in Uptown, surrounded by luxury townhomes and condos.

Melinda and her husband Jeff, who have been flipping homes since 2014, purchased it last year and got to work.

“The home had been renovated many times through the 1980s and 1990s,” Pope says. “There were just layers of wallpaper on wallpaper and paint on paint. They were layers of the story of this house.

“But we came across this sagey-green wallpaper in the guest quarters that just made me happy. I imagine these small quarters were originally used as quarters for domestic help. The wallpaper was so striking. It really gave somebody joy.”

That old hidden wallpaper in the 270-square-foot guest quarters served as inspiration for the rest of the home. “It really inspired me to honor the vibe of the home,” Pope says. ”I used that green in the kitchen cabinets and a contrasting green on the front door. Actually, when we stripped away some paint on the front door, we found that green.”

The result is lovely. She sought out to bring modern comforts to the four-bedroom, three-bath home with 2,913 square feet, while maintaining the charm of the past.

The first floor features an open floor plan and includes a living room with a fireplace, a large dining room, a fully upgraded kitchen with a wine refrigerator, three bedrooms, one and a half baths, and a laundry closet located right off the kitchen. An old sleeping porch that had previously been enclosed is a gorgeous highlight.

The second story includes a generous owner’s suite with vaulted ceilings and features a walkthrough closet with two sets of two closets flanking a built-in mirror. Pope calls it the runway. There’s a sitting area with a fireplace, and a bathroom that includes double sinks, a stand-alone shower, and a tub.

The detached two-car garage houses a bonus guest quarters of an additional 270 square ft. with a full bathroom and walk-in closet. Enjoy the back porch and beautifully hardscaped yard, complete with an electric gate.
