Most people don’t realize our state, and particularly our city has an abundance of award-winning Texas Modern homes.

When you think about it, the rise of this style is not surprising. We are known for bigger and better, but we are also known for innovation and common sense. The result is a unique Texas residential architectural style.

Dallas Architect David Williams is considered by most to be the pioneer of the Texas Modern movement, with O’Neill Ford coming along under his wing. These two men set the stage in the 1920s and ’30s for what we see today. The use of native Texas materials combined with the practical aspects of ranch construction made sense. What was exciting was the way these materials were incorporated into a new design direction.

New Interpretations of a Classic Style

New generations of architects are creating brilliant interpretations of the style while staying true to the influences of Williams and Ford. Mark Domiteaux and Laura Juarez Baggett are among the Dallas architects designing these timeless Texas Modern homes.

This Domiteaux + Baggett Texas Modern home was featured on the 2017 AIA Dallas Tour of Homes. If you are not familiar with this tour, it’s the only one in Dallas organized by architects. It showcases the most outstanding residential design in the city.

The team that brought this 7,160-square-foot Texas Modern to life included architect Daniel Mitchell, Waterford Construction, and Stantec Structural Engineering.

The AIA Dallas Tour of Homes website described this home beautifully:

This contemporary residence was designed for a busy family of five. Expansive windows take advantage of the large North Dallas lot, providing plenty of natural light to the interior spaces with a large covered patio extending the inside outdoors. The home was crafted to stand up to the additional wear and tear of not only three kids, but also a wheelchair. To handle the extra wear, steel was used prevalently throughout the home. Both owners work from home, and the public spaces were thoughtfully planned to serve as both living and office space. For example, the formal dining room is situated adjacent to the office to serve as a conference room when needed. The office is located near the entry so any business acquaintances need not enter further into the private realm of the house. Consideration was given to the scale of the home in relation to the neighborhood, and the design provides a comfortable and livable modern residence for this active family

One of the things that stood out to David Griffin listing agent Brandon Stewart was the cold-rolled steel baseboards. “If you have kids they are indestructible,” he said.

“The architects did a phenomenal job,” David Griffin listing agent Brandon Stewart said. “The entire house is oriented towards the backyard with views to the heated infiintiy-edge pool. It’s just beautiful.”

Stewart has 6010 Royal Crest Drive listed for $2.999 million. With the way luxury properties are blowing off the market in Dallas, this one won’t last long!
