Outgoing Dallas Builders Association president Andrew Pieper presents the presidential gavel to 2022-2023 president John Porizek of M/I Homes of DFW.

A new leader was tapped this month to preside over the Dallas Builders Association board of directors.

John Porizek, director of land development for M/I Homes of DFW, said he plans to spend his one-year term building the membership of the Dallas BA and providing affordable housing.

“I want to work with towns and cities to keep housing affordable as it relates to city impact fees and ordinances,” Porizek said. “I want to continue to partner with Collin College on their construction management program so the program can continue to provide a talent pool of professionals available for our workforce.”

It’s an interesting time for home building, as more residences are under construction in Dallas and Houston than the entire state of California, but single-family construction weakened in September, according to Robert Dietz, chief economist for the National Association of Home Builders.

Builder Background

Porizek grew up in Orion, Ill., graduated from Illinois State University, then moved to Chicago.

“I started working for a small home-building company in the Chicagoland area in 1994, which gave me the opportunity to learn the home-building business from the ground up,” he said. “I’ve been in the industry ever since.”

He moved to Dallas in 1998.

M/I Homes opened its Dallas division nine years ago, focusing on single-family raw land development and partnering with other developers and builders to acquire finished lots on which to build. The company has 21 active communities in D-FW.

“Every day brings new opportunities and challenges,” Porizek said. “There’s never a boring day. You get to see the start of a project through to the end. That’s very satisfying. You’re able to provide housing for individuals, which is the biggest investment they make.”

Members of the Dallas Builders Association are part of a large group of industry professionals who have the same goal — looking out for the betterment of home building and development, Porizek said.

“Membership in the Dallas Builders Association allows your organization to have insight on what towns and cities are proposing, which can impact our industry at a local, state and national level,” he said. “Being a member allows you to meet peers associated with other companies in your industry and develop professional and personal relationships that are beneficial.”

Porizek has been a member of the Dallas BA for six years. He served a one-year term as vice president/secretary, then vice president, and was passed the ceremonial gavel from past president Andrew Pieper of Hillwood Communities earlier this month.

The president oversees each committee within the Dallas BA to ensure its continued success. Porizek will represent the association at the Texas Association of Builders and NAHB events throughout the year.

“As president, you are the face of the Dallas BA,” Porizek said.

Other senior officers installed Oct. 1 include first vice president Adam Lingenfelter of Lingenfelter Custom Homes, vice president/secretary Kelly Hoodwin of Altura Homes, associate vice president Tiffany Acree of StrucSure Home Warranty, and treasurer James Falgout of James L. Falgout, PC.
