High Atop the Gold Crest on Turtle Creek, Life Imitates Art

Go ahead, zoom in. It’s art.

If you’re really really observant here on daltxrealestate.com, you’ll notice that we typically feature the Highlight Home sponsored by Dallas mortgage banker Lisa Peters of Cardinal Financial on Wednesdays. But today’s Sunday, Shelby. You’re really late. Well, you wouldn’t be the first person to tell me that — today — but this time I waited for our feature home to officially hit the market. On Friday. Yes, I know. I’m still late. I’m trying guys. Let’s move on.

Donald Neilson of Compass RE Texas has an amazing condo listing in the iconic Gold Crest high-rise on Turtle Creek. Instead of spending hours (and hours) rabbit-holing the Dallas Morning News archives and public records to see who may have owned this 1964-built condo before, let me tell you about this amazing 1,719-square-foot home with two bedrooms and two baths because it’s a work of art.

The condo is literally a framed work of art. The massive glass pivot-style front door perfectly frames both the literal art in its foyer and the metaphorical art that the homeowners have created with this condo. Neilson says interestingly, many of the front doors of this building’s units are as differed as the homeowners themselves. “The doors to the individual units are even works of art,” he said.

But here in Unit 1101, the works of art lie inside where the owners have showcased their collection and put their own stamp on the unit. “They enjoy living in a space that allows for creative expression of their style,” Neilson said. “And once inside, this penthouse unit rises to the occasion on the uniqueness scale.”

How do you achieve uniqueness in a condo? Rip the ceilings out! The owners opened the ceilings of the unit and exposed the raw concrete ceiling beams to create 12-foot ceilings. This added light and much-needed ceiling height to the space.

“This dramatic improvement elevated the home’s overall appearance while preserving the architectural integrity of the space,” Neilson said.

When the owners purchased this place, they were moving from a 6,000-square-foot-plus home, so every inch of the home had to have purpose, he said. With that in mind, the renovation produced a much-improved floorplan with the finest of materials including Brazilian slate, Travertine tile, and Italian marble. Note the extra-wide oak flooring on the photo below. That’s massive!

The well-appointed kitchen features a stunning waterfall kitchen island made of an immaculate Italian marble that I wish I had the design eye to tell you specifically what makes this just so special. I can only tell you it’s delicious. European-style cabinets with Miele and Sub-Zero kitchen appliances round out this kitchen so large that it has room for a grand piano and chaise lounge.

This unit is a corner unit, made even more special by the walls of glass doors that open onto the enormous terrace. Neilson says the windows were all replaced with beautiful new sliders and motorized blinds added. If the terrace wasn’t already calling to you, there are plenty of ways to get out there and enjoy the view from this private outdoor space.

Retreating to the primary suite, you’ll find a spacious bedroom with terrace access, a massive custom closet, and a luxurious bath with stunning fixtures and surfaces. Actually, both bathrooms are luxurious, but the primary bath here with tub and shower is a visual stunner.

Then, again there’s the view high above Turtle Creek. I mean, look at that view — and that’s on a cloudy day. Imagine a perfect day with picturesque clouds and skyscape so blue you’d think it was painted on. Like a work of art. See, it all connects.
