Here’s a novel HGTV reality concept: Drop two out-of-market couples into the Dallas real estate scene with $1,000 and see whether they can parlay that starting cash into a million-dollar home sale in six months.
That’s the premise of Flip to a Million, a new reality series on HGTV and Discovery +, which will premiere next Monday, Aug. 1, at 8 p.m.
The competing couples are Jason and EJ Williams of Chicago and Jon and Dani Wrobel of Long Island, N.Y. — each successful house flippers in their markets. With their startup money, they must buy, renovate and sell properties with the objective of making a $1 million home sale in six months.
It’s kind of like the “one red paperclip challenge” started by a Canadian blogger who traded his way from a single paperclip to a house in a series of 14 online trades over a year.
HGTV’s Alison Victoria, the series’ narrator, sprinkled a bit of hyperbole in describing the limited six-episode series, which she calls the “biggest real estate experiment of all time.”

“Trust me, I’ve taken a few real estate risks, so I know these two real estate couples are in for the challenge of their life,” Victoria said in a promotional video.
The first episode follows the couples as they pack up for the move to Dallas. They hit the ground running to research the Dallas market. The Williamses fund their first property purchase by taking on a bathroom renovation. The Wrobels score a finder’s fee on a house sale to buy their first property.
It looks like a fun watch.
