As the White House’s recommendations for group gatherings shrink to just 10 people at a time, Dallas ISD announced that the district will be closing its physical campuses “indefinitely.” More North Texas school districts are anticipated to follow suit.

“To slow the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in our community, all Dallas ISD schools will close indefinitely,” the district said in a statement. “This action follows advice from the Dallas County Health and Human Services department (DCHHS).”

Richardson ISD has also announced that it will close indefinitely.

“While schools are closed, all school and district meetings, events and activities will also be canceled or postponed,” RISD said in a statement.

Other districts will likely follow suit to curb the exponential spread of COVID-19, though no formal announcements have been made. According to the latest information available, Plano ISD and Fort Worth ISD will reopen after an extended Spring Break.

Critical Services Will Remain

“We recognize the significant impact this extended closure will have on the entire community, especially for families who depend on the district for critical services,” Dallas ISD officials said. “While our classrooms are empty, our work on behalf of children continues. We have activated at-home learning, our teachers are prepared to begin distance instruction, and Dallas ISD Food and Child Nutrition Services (FCNS) will distribute meals at select campus locations. These sites will become central locations for family and student resource distribution in the coming weeks. Please expect phone messages with updates and visit www.dallasisd.org/COVID19 for more information.”
